Shhhh I am going to let you in on a little secret, Cape Greko in Malahide has one of the best fillet steaks you’ll ever try!!

I don’t know what they do to it, but it’s like cutting into butter and the taste is phenomenal! It taste like steak should but with a little bit of extra flavour.

Having lived for many years in Astoria, NYC – the largest Greek neighbourhood outside of Greece, Greek food is not new to me.

I love Greek food with its simplistic style and beautiful natural flavours. It tends to be good honest food. I am delighted to have the Greek/Cypriot inspired Cape Greko on my doorstep in Malahide village.

The décor inside is modern but with an authentic Greek feel to it. The staff are always so welcoming and always smiling and happy to chat or answer any questions you have about the menu. The food and the service are what keep me a repeat customer.

The menu is varied and definitely has something to suit all tastes and ages, ranging from seafood, chicken,  steak, vegetarian and children’s menu.

On my most recent visit I had the Dolmades (stuffed vine leaves) to start, an acquired taste for sure, but delicious with the saltiness of the vine leaves and the fragrant rice and minced beef in the middle. Served on a bed of a tasty tangy tomato sauce, is worth trying, for those who have never tried this before.

My vegetarian friend went for the Halloumi cheese starter – Grilled Cypriot cheese served with vine tomatoes, basil and homemade bread. Wow! Of course I was in a position to try her starter but unfortunately my non-meat eating friend was unable to taste mine….more for me!

Cape Greko caters well for Vegetarians with lots of options to choose from such as Tzatziki (Greek yoghurt with cucumber, garlic and mint, served with pita bread) and a Vegetarian Meze platter (2 persons sharing) from their starters section.

Starters vary from a very reasonable €6.50 – €8.50 price range.

Onto the main course, there are many Greek classics such as Mousaka (under the chefs specialities), Pilafi with a choice of meat, seafood or veg, pan-fried in garlic butter, white wine, brown rice, peppers mushroom and onions, Souvlaki again with choice of meat, seafood or veg kebabs served with crispy onions and tzaztiki (this dish is a firm favourite of mine)
However this time I go for the fillet steak which at EUR 28.95 it is an average price for a fillet steak but it certainly packs a punch and you definitely get bang for your buck with this dish.

You have a choice of sauce with your steak, I choose the garlic butter, but when it arrives to the table I decided the sauce was not needed! Why ruin the most amazing piece of meat I have tasted in a long time by covering it in a sauce!

Sides are includes with a choice of salad, homemade chunky chips, garlic sautéed potatoes. I went for the gorgeous garlic potatoes.

My Veggie buddy order the Seafood souvlaki which consisted of monkfish, salmon and prawn kebabs with a side salad priced at €20.50. ‘’Bloomin’ delish!’’ my companion exclaims! I sneak a wee taste and wholly agree, the fish is fresh and the tzatziki sauce and Greek bread that also accompany it is just splendid too.

The portions in Cape Greko are big and you will leave feeling fully satisfied. Difficult though it was to fit in any dessert we decide to share some Baklava. The dessert menu also has cheesecake and profiteroles and Greek Yogurt to name but a few. A la carte prices range from €5.50 to €6.50.

Baklava, the famous Greek dessert, is served warmed with beautiful light layers of filo pastry filled with walnuts, cinnamon and honey, served with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream. The vanilla ice-cream just melts into the stickiness of this sweet dessert. We clear the plate, but then I always do when it comes to sweet treats!

For me Cape Greko is a little piece of the Aegean situated in the Emerald Isle, complete with a full bar including beer on tap too.

The early bird is fantastic value at 2 courses for €18.95/ 3 courses at €21.95 and is available Mon – Sat until 7pm and all day Sunday.

They are also open for Lunch on Saturday and Sunday with a 2 course lunch menu including tea or coffee at a steal of a price – €13.50.

They accommodate large groups too so it’s a perfect place for a family get together or birthday dinner.
