Barre3 is where ballet barre meets yoga, pilates and, for a limited time, free.

The Portland, Oregon-based fitness company has announced that its newest studio will open Oct. 21 at 8882 Moreland Street in Powell.

The studio, owned by Courtney Gerlach and Whitney Carpenter, will offer free classes during its opening week, Oct. 21-27.

“barre3 is a worldwide phenomenon,” said Gerlach, who already has a barre3 studio on West Lane Avenue in Columbus.

“After successfully opening the barre3 Columbus studio with my partner, Whitney Carpenter, we knew that bringing a new studio to Powell would be an amazing addition to the community.”

Hailed by SHAPE Magazine, Dr. Oz and Marie Claire, barre3 is based on the principle of having a balanced lifestyle.

The company’s classes are designed to be “accessible and transform the body through a focus on strength, grace and whole body wellness,” according to a company press release.

The fitness system, pitched as a modern evolution of the ballet barre workout and influenced by yoga and pilates, was founded in 2008 by Sadie Lincoln, a fitness and wellness expert.

The Moreland Street studio will be the first of its kind to open in Powell.

barre3’s signature workouts include isometric holds and small-range muscle motion strength training, low-impact cardio and seamless recovery stretches, developed to work the body one inch at a time.

“Unlike other barre-inspired workouts, barre3 offers modifications in many postures so that all fitness levels can get the most from their workout,” the company statement read. “As both a fitness system and whole body wellness philosophy, barre3 creates transformations that shape a strong, lean physical body and happy, balanced mindset.”

The company’s website, www.barre3.com, states that clients can “develop the length of a dancer and the strength of an athlete with our highly effective 60-minute workouts.”

“barre3 helps people not just get a good workout, but get to know their bodies better through fitness, nutrition and the mind/body connection,” Gerlach said. “I’m thrilled to spread barre3’s whole health approach to more people in Ohio.”

Since the company’s founding, barre3 has expanded to studios all over the country and several locations in the Philippines.

It also offers online workouts and nutritional programs through its website and regularly promotes a DVD series on QVC.

“In just five years barre3 has grown from a single studio in Portland, Ore. to over 50 locations and streaming online,” Lincoln said.

“Our mission is to make barre3 accessible to anyone, anywhere with studios across the U.S. and abroad. Partnering with passionate entrepreneurs and health advocates like Courtney and Whitney make this possible, we are thrilled to make Powell a part of the barre3 family.”

In addition to offering complimentary classes to celebrate the opening of the Powell location, special offers will be available with a “founding client” rate of $140 per month for unlimited classes through Oct. 31.

barre3 classes are available seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The company offers childcare during fitness sessions.
