5.20pm Top of the Pops BBC1 - As we say goodbye to 2016 and hello to 2017, presenters Fearne Cotton and Reggie Yates get the New Year's Eve party started with the biggest and best songs of the year, and they round up the celebrations with the last number one of 2016.
8.00pm Life in the Polar Bear Town with Gordon Buchanan BBC2 - Presenter and wildlife cameraman Gordon Buchanan heads to Canada at the peak of bear season, to discover what life is really like in the tiny town that's become known as the polar bear capital of the world.
7.00pm Ninja Warrior UK ITV - Ben Shephard, Rochelle Humes and Chris Kamara host a brand new series of the assault course game show.
7.00pm Britain's Best Loved Sitcoms Channel 4 - Narrated by Tamsin Greig, this is a look at the shows that have made us laugh out loud in our millions over the past half century. From modern game changers like Gavin and Stacey, Mrs Brown's Boys and The Inbetweeners, all the way back to old-school classics such as Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em, Dad's Army and Steptoe and Son - via perennial favourites Blackadder, Only Fools and Horses and Fawlty Towers - which one will come out on top? Channel 4 commissioned a poll of all age groups across the country to find out - with the results to be counted down to the nation's most revered sitcom of all.
8.00pm Take Me Out ITV - Paddy McGuinness presents a celebrity special of the hilarious dating show. Descending in the love lift and looking for a date are model and former rugby international Thom Evans, Capital Radio's Roman Kemp and Ritchie Neville from boy band Five.
8.00pm Peter Cook and Dudley Moore: The Missing Sketches Channel 4 - Peter Cook and Dudley Moore are still considered to be one of Britain's most outstanding comedy double acts. But despite their popularity, much of their television material was deleted back in the 1970s. This documentary showcases a number of new clips which have recently come to light from sketches which were thought to have been lost forever, some not seen for over 50 years, plus rare footage of routines performed in Australia when Cook and Moore made two episodes of their show, Not Only... But Also, back in 1971.
9.00pm Dragons' Den BBC2 - Dragons' Den: Pitches to Riches returns to relive extraordinary encounters between brave entrepreneurs and those formidable Dragon investors.
9.00pm Alan Carr's New Year Specstacular Channel 4 - Guests include Danny Dyer, Keith Lemon, Greg Rutherford, Laura Whitmore, Sinitta, Will Mellor and Gemma Collins. Music comes from Professor Green who sings One Eye on the Door and I Need You Tonight, and Tieks performs Sunshine.
9.00pm Dawn French: 30 Million Minutes Live BBC4 - Dawn French in her critically acclaimed one-woman show, 30 Million Minutes. Filmed during its final West End run in October 2016, it takes the audience on a journey through various delights and riches, with the odd irksome tribulation thrown in, as Dawn speaks about the lessons life has taught her, and the things she knows to be true. With a sharp eye for comic detail and a wicked ear for the absurdities of life, this sees the acclaimed comedian at her finest.
New Year's Day
3.30pm Planet Earth: A World of Wonder BBC1 - A compilation episode of the wildlife documentary series presented by David Attenborough, visiting animals in their habitats across the globe, recorded in stunning ultra-high definition.
7.00pm Diversity Presents: Steal the Show ITV - Dancer and choreographer Ashley Banjo leads the nation's favourite dance troupe as they present this one-off special full of surprises, special guests and lots of incredible dancing. Three members of the public take to the stage alongside Diversity, performing for their chance to steal the show and win an amazing prize. Also featured are two groups of dancing colleagues who go head to head, and there is a collaboration between Diversity and the West End cast of Motown: The Musical. Special guests include Olympian and I'm a Celebrity... star Sam Quek and fellow Britain's Got Talent finalists Stavros Flatley, plus music is provided by chart-toppers The Vamps.
8.00pm Dragons' Den BBC2 - Two former army captains hope to get the Dragons to stand to attention with their bespoke gifting business. A young duo pitch their innovative ticket comparison site and a pair of multi-millionaire entrepreneurs are seeking cash from the multi-millionaire Dragons' for their new safety device. Will the Dragons have finally met their match or will they see the potential in a deal?


8.30pm Sherlock BBC1 - Fourth series of the popular drama. Sherlock waits to see where Moriarty will make his posthumous move. One mysterious case in particular baffles Scotland Yard, but Sherlock is more interested in a seemingly trivial detail. Why is someone destroying images of the late prime minister Margaret Thatcher? Is there a madman on the loose? Or is there a much darker purpose at work? Something with its roots deep in Mary Watson's past...
8.30pm Morecambe and Wise's Funniest Moments ITV - A celebration of the incomparable comedy duo with a countdown of their top 20 greatest TV moments as voted for by comedy actors and comedians. 11.00am Wanted Down Under BBC1 - Series in which British families are given a look at life in Australia or New Zealand ahead of a possible move there.
1.20pm Father Brown BBC1 - Drama series based on the novels of GK Chesterton. Father Brown is asked to look after Lady Felicia's wayward niece Bunty, who soon finds herself suspected of murder.
2.10pm Impossible BBC1 - Game show in which 30 players compete across the series, scoring points by answering questions correctly. However, they must avoid the impossible answers, otherwise they will be eliminated from the show until the next day. In each episode there are three rounds, and the three highest scorers from each round play against each other in the final. The winner of this battle faces a ú10,000 question.
4.15pm The Hairy Bikers' Comfort Food BBC1 - Dave Myers and Simon King are back with a new series that sees them cooking some of their favourite comfort food.
6.30pm Great Railway Journeys BBC2 - Michael Portillo embarks on a journey from London to Edinburgh with the help of his 19th-century guidebook.
7.30pm Supercommuters: How Far Would You Go? Channel 4 - Charlie Luxton meets extreme commuters to explore what happens to your lifestyle when you live hundreds of miles away from work. The programme explores the new home and lifestyle opportunities created by the boom in city property prices, the fall in air fares, and the rise in remote working via the internet. Charlie meets three London commuters with vastly different journeys to work. He joins one super commuter with a daily six-hour round trip, and another who at the end of the working day flies home to another country.
8.00pm Food Unwrapped: Diet Special Channel 4 - In this one-hour special, Jimmy Doherty, Kate Quilton, Matt Tebbutt and guest presenter Kiran Jethwa scour the globe for the latest trends and scientific advances around weight loss. Should we believe recent headlines that eating more fat could make us thin? Kate meets an award-winning NHS doctor who has achieved amazing results by putting patients on a diet that's low in carbs and higher in fat than current NHS guidelines suggest. What about dairy? Should dieters be going for red, green or blue top milk?
9.00pm Silent Witness BBC1 - Emilia Fox leads a twentieth series of the crime drama about forensic pathologists.  When a people smuggler is found dead in the City, Nikki must delve into London's illegal immigrant community. She meets a vulnerable Syrian teen called Akka who is in need of help, putting Nikki in a moral dilemma - and the killer is still on the loose.
9.00pm Britain's Ancient Capital: Secrets of Orkney BBC2 - Three-part series in which Neil Oliver, Chris Packham, Andy Torbet and Dr Shini Somara join hundreds of archaeologists from around the world who have gathered in Orkney to investigate at one of Europe's biggest digs.
9.00pm The Halcyon ITV - Eight-part drama series telling the story of a bustling and glamorous grand hotel in wartime London. In the opening episode, Lord Hamilton returns to the hotel just as a scandal threatens to engulf it. As a mysterious American guest arrives, hotel manager Garland must reckon with unwanted and unexpected visitors. Freddie returns to the hotel with a surprise for Garland's daughter Emma.
9.00pm The Undateables Channel 4 - The award-winning series returns with new singletons looking for love. In a world where first impressions are everything, finding love can be tricky - let alone when you have a disability, which can sometimes make it seem impossible. Postman Sam, 23, from Camberley in Surrey, is a well-known face on his rounds, but while he may be a pro at delivering the mail he hasn't had as much success delivering chat up lines. Sam has Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism, which he feels makes dating awkward for him. Will Sam's date with 23-year-old Amy progress to his first ever second date? Ian, from Southend-on-Sea, is looking for the perfect partner to see the world with, but time is running out for the 38-year-old. At the age of 15 Ian was diagnosed with Usher Syndrome, a degenerative eye condition which means he is slowly losing his eyesight. Ian has just eight per cent of his vision left and has no idea when he will lose his sight completely.
9.45pm Rude Tube E4 - Join Alex Zane as he welcomes in 2017 with a bumper Top 100 countdown celebrating the best clips of the year.
10.00pm First Dates Hotel Channel 4 - Fred takes a break from the First Dates restaurant to run his very own summer season of love at a luxury hotel in the south of France. Along with his team of matchmakers, he welcomes unlucky-in-love singletons from all over the UK, who are literally going that extra mile in search of The One. During their two-day stay, daters embark on the most romantic blind date of their lives. If Cupid's arrow strikes, they then have the rest of their stay to see if they've finally found amour. Fashion model Kelly is searching for a man who'll pass muster with her Daddy, a 6'2' bodybuilder who has a habit of phoning her mid-date for a progress report.
11.05pm Tattoo Fixers Channel 4 - The tattoo fixers return for a third series in which they revamp more of the nation's most embarrassing, offensive, and sometimes downright awful body art.

8.00pm The Great Interior Design Challenge BBC2 - In the first round of the first heat, the group of amateurs taking on the design challenge are hairdresser Oliver, dog walker Katie and photographer Daniela. They must each transform a bedroom in Regency properties in the grand Pittville estate of Cheltenham. Katie has a nervous time trying to please the client with her use of a controversial peach colour scheme which divides the judges.
8.00pm Paul O'Grady's For the Love of Dogs: New Year Special ITV - Paul O'Grady visits Battersea Dogs and Cats Home to help the residents and hopes to find loving homes for all of them in 2017.
9.00pm Yellowstone BBC2 - Three-part documentary exploring Yellowstone, one of the most remarkable places on the planet. It is home to North America's most iconic wildlife, and every year these animals must survive 'the thaw'. Patrick Aryee follows the grizzly bears that are taking a risk with the weather by leaving their winter dens early. Hungry wolves are struggling to bring down their elk prey in the unusually shallow snow. And for great grey owls, it is the iciness of the snow that is hampering their hunts.
8.00pm How to Lose Weight Well Channel 4 - Dr Xand van Tulleken and dietician Hala El-Shafie ask ordinary Brits to road test some of the most popular and talked about diets out there, and to then give viewers the lowdown on how the diets worked for them.
8.00pm a New Life in OZ Five - Documentary series following British families as they relocate to Australia. The Lewis family are on a one-way ticket from Brighton to Melbourne. Leaving behind jobs, family and friends, this is the gamble of a lifetime. Civil engineer James is hoping for a well-paying job down under, all the better to keep his shopaholic wife Claire in the manner to which she would like to become accustomed.

9.00pm Italy's Invisible Cities BBC1 - Using the latest 3D scanning technology, Alexander Armstrong and Dr Michael Scott uncover 2500 years of hidden history in Naples from its earliest Greek and Roman origins. They explore how the volcano of Mount Vesuvius both nurtured the region and exacted a terrible price on the local population. Plus, they delve into a labyrinth of fascinating underground spaces that helped build and sustain the city.



9.00pm No Offence Channel 4 - Paul Abbott's award-winning drama returns for a second series of rollercoaster cases to be cracked by the brilliant, but dysfunctional crime fighting family of coppers. On full surveillance mode, the Friday Street squad have an explosive start to the day, at the funeral of the son of notorious gangster Nora Attah. Straight back in the deep end, DI Viv Deering and the team fight to prevent the breakout of a gang war in the city. Meanwhile Joy and Tegan literally uncover a body of work to piece together a case against the dodgy crematorium owners.
9.00pm James May The Reassembler BBC4 - Series in which James May explores the intricacies and engineering marvels of various objects by putting them back together again from a pile of hundreds of their component parts. James reassembles the 135 parts that make up a 1960s Kenwood Chef a701a food mixer. This literal food revolution is responsible for mixing more cake batter than Mary Berry has mixed in her entire lifetime.
10.00pm Second Opinion BBC2 - Dr Xand van Tulleken takes a satirical look back on 2016 in health news. With a round-up of the some of the most baffling medical headlines of the year, he investigates whether rollercoasters really do cure kidney stones, whether paracetamol is turning us into a nation of psychopaths and whether we need to rethink how we use the loo.
10.00pm A Very British Brothel Channel 4 - This follow-up film returns to Sheffield's City Sauna - the only licensed massage parlour run by a mother and daughter on the city's 'golden mile of sex'. Owner Kath and manager Jenni specialise in mature and larger ladies. Business is booming, and they plan to expand. But with new premises thin on the ground, will Kath ever achieve her dream of opening City 2? If that wasn't enough of a headache, there's damp in the gentleman's lounge and a customer with a custard fetish. What could possibly go wrong?
10.00pm In Therapy Five -  Combining the privileged intimacy of the therapy room with personal interviews, this documentary reveals one of the UK's most notorious celebrities laid bare like never before. From joining her sisters in The Nolans at the age of two, Coleen is now 50, on her second marriage, and has suffered through domestic and sexual abuse, alcoholism, infidelity, divorce, the death of her closest sister, and a dramatic and very well-publicised family feud.

8.00pm The Money Saving Diet Show ITV - Six overweight Brits are put through six off-the-shelf diets for 28 days - Lean in 15, the Paleo diet, 5:2, the Juice diet, Lighter Life, and Juicing. The programme follows their journey to see who loses the most weight, and also works out how much each diet costs for every pound of weight they lose.
8.00pm The Restoration Man Channel 4 - George Clarke returns for a new series of the show that helps rescue neglected architectural treasures across Britain. Young couple Steven Crame and Marina Bacchelli were looking for their first home to own together in Berkshire, when they found a disused water pumping station nestling in its own ancient woodland. The couple threw themselves into the task of converting the huge brick shed into a modern four-bed family home, while preserving a 15-tonne crane as a central feature of their lounge. But a new-born baby, flooding and spiralling costs add to the pressure.
8.00pm Bargain Loving Brits in the Sun Five - Documentary series featuring expats who left the UK for a new and cheaper life in Benidorm.
9.00pm Death in Paradise BBC1 - Sixth series of the crime drama set in the Caribbean. The death of a scientist on the side of a live volcano proves a difficult case to crack for Humphrey and his team when everything appears to point to a death from natural causes.

9.00pm Unforgotten ITV - Second series of the gripping crime drama series. Detectives Cassie and Sunny reunite as they take on a case concerning the remains of a body found locked in a suitcase in the River Lea. As the pair begin the complicated task of trying to identify the body, the stories of four people with apparent links to the victim begin to unfold. Old wounds are reopened when the detectives track down the victim's wife and son, who have been in the dark about his disappearance for 26 years. Who wanted the man dead and why?
9.00pm Spies Channel 4 - In this new series from the makers of SAS: Who Dares Wins, three former spies put a group of 15 men and women to the test to see if they have the skills and qualities required for that battle. They go through a series of exercises based on the Intelligence Officer New Entry Course: an intense, unsettling psychological experiment run by people who've been through the real thing.
9.00pm Sword, Musket and Machine Gun: Britain's Armed History BBC4 -
Dr Sam Willis traces the history of the weapons that have shaped Britain. In the first episode, Sam receives a lesson in swordsmanship from the earliest combat manual as he gets to grips with the swords, shields and lances that dominated the battlefield a thousand years ago. Sam finds out what the Bayeux Tapestry reveals about the brutal reality of combat, why the crossbow came to be seen as an instrument of the devil, and he tries his hand at a longbow, the decisive weapon of medieval warfare.

8.00pm Best Walks with a View with Julia Bradbury ITV - Julia Bradbury chooses some of her favourite and most accessible family treks from across the UK. In this episode, she sets off on her favourite coastal walk to one of the most famous landmarks on the Jurassic Coast - Old Harry Rocks. Taking in miles of golden sandy beaches and the dramatic history of the bay, Julia's walk offers a fantastic example of the British coastline at its best.
9.00pm World's Most Extraordinary Homes BBC2 - Award-winning architect Piers Taylor and actress and property enthusiast Caroline Quentin explore extraordinary homes built in mountain locations around the world, meeting the owners and architects brave enough to take the challenges on. In the Santa Monica mountains in California, one homeowner has built her dream home from the wings and tail fins of a disused Boeing 747. In Arizona, Caroline and Piers visit a stunning modern house which has an innovative take on traditional rammed earth houses, a centuries-old technique of naturally absorbing the heat during the day and releasing it at night.

10.35pm Graham Norton's Big Red Chair BBC1 - Graham Norton tells the red chair story. The tale of how this precarious flippable piece of furniture came to be a universally loved feature of his show and how it has played host to some amazing audience anecdotes. Each week, Graham's celebrity guests have watched open-mouthed as daring audience members have gripped the red chair tightly and told their story, all the while hoping not to be flipped.
