Cultural Sundays Utrecht

Originated in 2002 Cultural Sundays has become one of the most popular events in Utrecht. Cultural Sundays is an annual series of festivals and events, organised in close collaboration with cultural, arts, educational and social institutions and organisations in the city of Utrecht. Each festival addresses a different theme and covers a broad spectrum of cultural and recreational programmes for a wide and diverse audience. Many art disciplines, including theatre, opera, music, dance, film, literature, visual arts, street culture and storytelling are represented in the festivals. Pride Photo Award, Amsterdam

Pride Photo Award is an annual international contest for photos about sexuality and gender diversity. The photos provide alternative views to the Western notion of gender as a binary concept (male/female) and, secondly, show the diversity of the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) community. This year’s theme is ‘Extremely Normal’, challenging photographers to look beyond flamboyant stereotypes and to make extraordinary photos of ordinary (LGBT) people. A jury of internationally renowned photography experts will select the winners in each of the four categories and the best overall picture that will receive the Pride Photo Award. This year’s chairman is Stephen Mayes, director of VII Photo Agency New York and former secretary of World Press Photo. The jury includes Jane Jackson, director emeritus and advisor of the renowned Sir Elton John Photography Collection. The winning photos will be exhibited in Amsterdam’s historic Oude Kerk for one month and will go on tour afterwards. www.pridephotoaward.org
Bomb at Museum of Contemporary Aboriginal Art ,Utrecht

The exhibition BOMB is a striking, fascinating and at times, humorous spectacle. It is an intense confrontation with nationalism, racism and discrimination. Artists Blak Douglas (aka Adam Hill) and Adam Geczy have staged this exhibition for the AAMU Museum of contemporary Aboriginal art in Utrecht to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the Treaty of Utrecht. 48 Hours of The Hague

From Friday 6 to Sunday 8 September 2013 The Hague will be entirely devoted to music, theatre, art and many other cultural festivities. This is the first time that a full weekend of cultural activities has been organized. The events surrounding the opening of the cultural season are being collectively represented this year under the title “48 Hours of The Hague”. During the festival there will be plenty for young and old to experience in the city. Well-known events such as Museum Night and Out in The Hague Festival will of course return, but new activities will also be introduced, such as The Hague Hotel Night. Also, galleries in the centre will hold open days and various theatre shows can be visited along The Hague’s canals.
24 Hours of Culture, Rotterdam

For 24 hours the city will host theatre, dance, visual arts, music and design events. Visitors will be able to see previews, premieres, workshops at more than 50 locations across Rotterdam. The Rotterdam Maritime Museum will for example offer an exclusive tour of its depot which holds over 500,000 precious objects. The Dutch Photography Museum will open the multimedia exhibition WHITE – photography, art, fashion, architecture, film, video – which examines the unlimited possibilities of white. The World of the Wiitte de With quarter art festival will present a mix of art, performance and music around the area known as the art axis of Rotterdam. The rich Rotterdam hip-hop scene will present 24 Hours of Subculture. World Food Festival, Rotterdam

The World Food Festival is coming to various locations around the city of Rotterdam. The festival will give you the chance to learn more about everything to do with food and features large and small events, markets, tours, interactive exhibitions and workshops. Rotterdam, a city of 170 nationalities, will let you see and taste its culinary riches. Visitors can also learn more about foods of the future and gastronomic trends.
The Anatomy Lesson – From Rembrandt to Damien Hirst, Gemeentemuseum, The Hague

“The Anatomy Lesson” will display works by 17th century masters alongside major modern and contemporary international artists. Visitors will literally be able to get under the human skin in works of art from Rembrandt to Hirst.
Have you always wanted to know more about the innovative anatomy of the Surgery Guild in the seventeenth century? Or are you more interested in the failure of the physical body, the power of the medical establishment and the relationship between mind and body? “The Anatomy Lesson” will acquaint you with these themes and will also introduce you to sculptor Folkert de Jong. His installation “The Primacy of Matter over Thought” places you at the heart of the exhibition and you become aware of the vulnerability of human existence. In short, “The Anatomy Lesson” will feature the human body from a variety of different perspectives.

100 Most Beautiful Rembrandts at Teylers Museum, Haarlem

No other Dutch artist is as well known and loved worldwide as Rembrandt. Yet it has not always been that way. In his own day, he was counted among the greatest masters, but after his death he was often reviled for his loose style and risqué subjects. This all changed in the 19th century, and he came to be revered as the greatest artist of all time. Those changing tastes are the subject of this exhibition. Teylers Museum has one of the world’s leading collections of Rembrandt etchings and drawings. For this occasion, Rembrandt’s 100 most beautiful works will be brought out of storage. For a brief time, his famous self-portraits, moving Bible scenes, tender portraits of his wife Saskia and dramatic landscapes will again be on display for all to admire.

Paris! Paris! French advertising fans at the Museum of Bags and Purses, Amsterdam

In the exhibition Paris! Paris! the Museum of Bags and Purses will show advertising fans from early twentieth-century Paris. The fans were designed by prominent illustrators, graphic designers and caricaturists, then offered to those attending places of entertainment. Having served as advertisements for luxury labels, hotels, restaurants and casinos, they provide an idea as to the art movements, fashions, styles and atmosphere found in Paris during that time. This collection of fans, a sub collection on loan from collector Hans van Emmerik, has never been shown to the public. Since 1967 Van Emmerik has been collecting fashion from the period 1900 to 1950. By organizing this exhibition the Museum of Bags and Purses wishes to reveal a hidden treasure to the public.
The Dutch Dance Festival, Maastricht
4, 5 and 6 October
The Festival will be taking place for the 16th time in Maastricht where leading Dutch dance companies and striking new choreographers will present unique and remarkable productions. No other festival will be hosting so many choreographers and dancers and such a unique selection of work. The festival offers the dance enthusiast the opportunity to enjoy the richness of Dutch dance in just one weekend, from early in the morning till late at night. See dance in unexpected places in the city, productions in theatres and film on the big screen. The festival will include urban dance, classical ballet and modern dance disciplines.
Keukenhof Flower Bulb Market
11 – 13 October 2013
The Keukenhof Flower Bulb Market, will be held during the weekend of 11 to 13 October, in the Oranje-Nassau Pavilion at Keukenhof, Lisse. The colour of spring makes way for a market where renowned growers present their flower bulbs. Specialists will explain how bulbs can be grown most successfully at home. During the Bulb Market the international bulb-growing season will be given its official start. Over the coming months a total of approximately 7 million flower bulbs are planted in the park.
The Flower Bulb Market will be open from Friday 11 until Sunday 13 October from 10 a.m. until 4.30 p.m. Entrance and parking are free of charge. The Keukenhof gardeners will be giving planting demonstrations with useful tips and advice. Guided tours will take place at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The theme for 2014 will be “Holland”. The park will be open in 2014 from 20 March to 18 May.
Chanel Legend Exhibition, The Gemeentemuseum, The Hague

The ‘Little Black Dress’, the Chanel suit and Chanel No. 5 – all still part of today’s universal fashion vocabulary. The designs of Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel (1883-1971) revolutionised the way women dressed in the 20th century. Chanel stood for elegance, style and freedom of movement. Her designs became classics and still feature in today’s fashion scene. The Chanel Legend tells the fascinating story of Coco Chanel and her celebrated fashion house. The exhibition includes a range of top items, including original Chanel designs of the 1920s and ’30s, women’s suits of the 1960s and creations once worn by star clients like Marlene Dietrich, Romy Schneider and Her Majesty Queen Paola of Belgium.

Kazimir Malevich exhibition at The Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam

The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam will present an exhibition devoted to Kazimir Malevich (1878-1935). It will be the largest show in twenty years to explore the work of an artist who was arguably one of the most important founders of abstract art. The exhibition will be a tribute to the Russian avant-garde and will include more than 500 objects from the collection of the Stedelijk Museum, the Khardzhiev Collection (under the stewardship of the Stedelijk), the Costakis Collection (housed by the State Museum of Contemporary Art, Thessaloniki) and diverse lenders. http://www.stedelijk.nl/en

Arts Holland has just released a new app for cultural travellers to Holland.
When you have an I-phone you can now download the “Arts Holland Travel Guide” and make your own artistic itineraries in Holland.
Arts Holland has expanded its portfolio with a unique app. This app makes it possible for visitors who want to come to Holland to create an itinerary based on their personal cultural interests. The “Arts Holland Travel Guide” allows users to set an itinerary from both the desktop and the iPhone. Elements which can be added to the list are an agenda, routes and a map to events and locations in the four major cities Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht and The Hague.
The personal ‘travel list’ then guides users through the cities on the basis of directions. By adding one’s own pictures to the guide the travel experience becomes more personalized and can be re-lived and shared with friends via social media during and after the trip. The app can be used both on-and offline so that you are able to avoid high roaming costs. This user-friendly app is fully integrated with the Arts Holland website artsholland.com and the Arts Holland map and it is linked to the open data platform.
