YUSNIEL DIAZ, LIFE DEVOTED TO BASEBALL.
When Yusniel Díaz started in professional baseball a-class, at the beginning of April, he had a dismal 17-1 streak. But where it hurts the soul rises the spirit and, suddenly, any given day, feel the sound of baseball.
The huge jolt of culture change, leave the family thousands of miles behind and enter an unknown area bring any kick that sooner or later becomes process.
“That me and affects me is true, a little, because it is the family of one”, told DIARIO DE CUBA leaflet number 10 of the Dodgers. “I’m 19 years old and I know enough, but things I need to know and your parents are much needed. Miss them too”.
In November of 2015, Yusniel Díaz signed with the franchise from Chavez Ravine for 15.5 million. In late March he wore Dodger to play with the big team in two games of spring training, where he hit two hits in four innings.
“I was impressed being in front of those big players,” he says.
On 7 April, yuppie debuted as a professional with the branch of advanced class-a Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. “I think to put lot of pressure himself, trying to hit the ball to 1,000 feet,” said to the minor-league (Milb.com) page manager Drew Saylor.
Then, in the middle of his streak, it linked three home runs in consecutive (from 15 to 17 April) nights for the first time in his career. In Cuba he had not connected home runs during his rookie season.
Questioned about where is the secret of its current power, Yusniel Díaz responds that in multiple sessions of work and the new training mode.
“Here in the United States and Dominican not working as in Cuba. On the island what more do is play ball; by that party we know much, but what is not. When I was in the Dominican I gained much strength, high muscle mass and that gave me all these results I’m having now. I have much more swing speed,”he explains.
Within the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes team all players except Yusniel Díaz 20 years go. The habanero will meet them in October, when probably can make the leap to the level of double-a at end of 2016 or beginning of the next campaign.
By now accumulated three triple (leader), batted 13 (fourth) and 600 slugging (fourth) in the League’s Carolina (A advanced), offensive based on permanent aggression against fast shipments. In the last seven games, Yusniel treasures average (11 in 28) with six extra-base 393.
Even in the most frustrating moments the rookie does not feel the pressure. He understands that things arrive by nature and work, without hurry on the goals. It stays focused on the daily work. “This is pick up little by little. One is learning every day”, she says.
In any instance of his slump was seen dancing in the gardens. Yusniel took advantage to rehearse some step. “We must enjoy, men, have fun,” he says.
“The truth is that we were surprised his energy and positivity”, said manager Drew Saylor. “He loves to be laughing and making some kind of joke with the guys. When you listen to the songs in the stadium, you can see him dancing in the gardens”.
The understanding between the player and the manager is acceptable, although Yusniel has not had time to study the language. “But I record things and me are stuck,” says.
It is still a fan of your industrial equipment and suffer when they lose. “At the beginning I started to follow them and they were losing almost all of the games and that was mother. “But I could not follow them more by training, finished very tired and what he did was to rest”.
Currently Yusniel Díaz punt for offensive line 314-267-600, three triples, three home runs and 13 RBIs. He has come to steal four times and has been hunted in two, getting four tickets and 12 strikeouts. Seven times he has started as a centerfielder and four on the right side.
The effects appear when talent meets the zone of confidence. Yusniel Díaz career reached a new stage of learning. YUSNIEL DÍAZ, VIDA DEDICADA AL BÉISBOL.
Cuando Yusniel Díaz comenzó en el béisbol profesional de clase-A, a principios de abril, tuvo una funesta racha de 17-1. Pero donde se duele el alma se levanta el espíritu y, de repente, un día cualquiera, sientes el sonido del béisbol.
La enorme sacudida de cambiar de cultura, dejar la familia miles de millas atrás y entrar en una zona desconocida traen algún retroceso que tarde o temprano se convierte en proceso.
“De que me pesa y me afecta es verdad, un poco, porque es la familia de uno”, dice a DIARIO DE CUBA el prospecto número 10 de los Dodgers. “Tengo 19 años y sé bastante, pero me faltan cosas por saber y hacen mucha falta tus padres. Los extraño demasiado”.
En noviembre de 2015, Yusniel Díaz firmó con la franquicia de Chávez Ravine por 15,5 millones. A finales de marzo se vistió de Dodger al jugar con el equipo grande en dos partidos del entrenamiento primaveral, donde bateó dos hits en cuatro turnos.
“Me impresionó estar delante de esos grandes peloteros”, afirma.
El 7 de abril, el Yupi debutó como profesional con la sucursal de clase-A avanzada Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. “Pienso que se puso mucha presión a sí mismo, tratando de golpear la pelota a 1.000 pies”, expresó a la página de las Ligas Menores (Milb.com) el manager Drew Saylor.
Entonces, en medio de su mala racha, ligó tres jonrones en noches consecutivas (del 15 al 17 de abril) por primera vez en su carrera. En Cuba no había conectado jonrones durante su temporada de novato.
Interrogado sobre dónde está el secreto de su poder actual, Yusniel Díaz responde que en múltiples sesiones de trabajo y el modo de entrenamiento nuevo.
“En Dominicana y aquí en Estados Unidos no se trabaja como en Cuba. En la Isla lo que más se hace es jugar pelota; por esa parte sabemos mucho, pero en lo que es trabajo no. Cuando estuve en Dominicana adquirí mucha fuerza, mucha masa muscular y eso me dio todos estos resultados que estoy teniendo ahora. Tengo mucha más velocidad de swing”, explica.
Dentro del equipo Rancho Cucamonga Quakes todos los jugadores, excepto Yusniel Díaz, pasan los 20 años. El habanero los cumplirá en octubre, cuando probablemente pueda dar el salto hacia el nivel de Doble-A, a finales de 2016 o principios de la próxima campaña.
Por ahora acumula tres triples (líder), 13 impulsadas (cuarto) y 600 de slugging (cuarto) en la liga de Carolina (A avanzada), ofensiva basada en una permanente agresividad ante los envíos rápidos. En los últimos siete juegos, Yusniel atesora 393 de average (11 en 28) con seis extrabases.
Incluso en los momentos más frustrantes el novato no siente la presión. Entiende que las cosas llegan por naturaleza y trabajo, sin apresurarse en las metas. Se mantiene enfocado en el trabajo diario. “Esto se coge poco a poco. Uno va aprendiendo cada día”, dice.
En alguna instancia de su slump se le vio bailando en los jardines. Yusniel aprovechaba para ensayar algún paso. “Hay que disfrutar, men, pasarla bien”, dice.
“Lo cierto es que nos ha sorprendido su energía y positividad”, dijo el manager Drew Saylor. “Él ama estar riendo y hacer algún tipo de broma con los chicos. Cuando se escuchan las canciones en el estadio, tú lo puedes ver bailando en los jardines”.
El entendimiento entre el jugador y el manager es aceptable, aunque Yusniel no ha tenido tiempo de estudiar el idioma. “Pero yo grabo las cosas y se me pegan”, asegura.
Aún es fan de su equipo Industriales y sufre cuando ellos pierden. “Al principio empecé a seguirlos y estaban perdiendo casi todos los juegos y eso era de madre. Pero no pude seguirlos más por los entrenamientos, terminaba muy cansado y lo que hacía era descansar”.
Actualmente Yusniel Díaz batea para línea ofensiva de 267/314/600, tres triples, tres jonrones y 13 empujadas. Ha salido a robar cuatro veces y ha sido cazado en dos, obteniendo cuatro boletos y 12 ponches. Siete veces ha iniciado como jardinero central y cuatro en el derecho.
Cuando el talento se encuentra con la zona de confianza aparecen los efectos. Una etapa de aprendizaje nueva ha llegado a la carrera de Yusniel Díaz. Él ya no piensa en el pasado, si fue Novato del Año de la Serie 54, o si le vedaron el premio al saberse la noticia de su salida del país. Solo existe el presente.
