The Met Gala is over and now it is time to see who did well and who could have done better. Most importantly, if they could have done better, how could they have done so. It’s time for the image consultant in me to give you a quick style review on these celebs.

Before we move on to the fashion-policing, you should know that Met Gala 2016 was a grand event this year. The theme chosen was something extremely relevenat in todays time -“Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.” -It was a white tie event the aim was to focus on the dichotomy between handmade haute couture and machine-made fashion whos distinction in today’s time is beginning to blur.

Celebrities Who Rocked It :

Emma Watson – Calvin Klein

She took the cake on this. Emma Watson’s outfit was not only gala worthy and stylish but the entire outfit was sustainable friendly. Majority of the fabric used in the gown was made from Newlife, a yarn made from 100 percent post-consumer plastic bottles; and the detailing on the bustier was made with organic silk and cotton. Isn’t that amazing. The silhouette of the dress fits her body perfectly and her hair, makeup is spot on.

Definitely my favourite this year.

Naomi Campbell – Roberto Cavalli

I loved this outfit on Naomi Campbell. The black silk lace crop top and skirt with cutouts reflected Naomi’s strong personality perfectly well. The gown from a distance almost looked deep stone grey and gave her, her trademark edgy look. The accessory and makeup was simple and complimented her overall ensemble.

Bella Hadid – Givenchy

Simple yet stunning. Reminded me of Jessica Rabbits but in black. She looks mysterious and classic at the same time. However, if I had to change one teeny-weeny thing about the outfit, it would perhaps be the shoes. Instead of a peep toe, a knee-length boot or lace up stiletto would have made the ensemble more impactful.

Zendaya – Michael Kors

She looks like a futuristic goddess from outerspace. The gold rhinestone color complements her skin tone beautifully and so does her smoky makeup. The silhouette follows her body well and I love the choker style. What I admire about Zendaya’s style is that each time she surprises us on the runway with a complete different look. She is not afraid to experiment and owns the look she wears like it was made for her.

Amber Heard – Ralph Lauren

I love the satin – sheen look on Amber Heard. She glows in this slinky rose gold outfit.  The color is great for her skin and the the bright lipstick makes her look flawlessly red carpet ready. I love the drape of the gown which is complemented by her side flicked bombshell hairstyle and simple lariat necklace.

Karlie Kloss- Brandon  Maxwell

I am a sucker for cut-outs and that is why this ensemble features on my best dressed list. I love Karlie’s sleek back hairstyle which keeps distractions away to help us focus entirely on her dress. The fit and the cut makes the dress look as if it was made for her. Love the shimmery clutch with it as well.

Kendall Jenner – Versace

It was a nice change to see Kendall Jenner wearing this modern futuristic Versace outfit when most of her other crew chose to wear Balmain. Kendall knows how to take risk and carry it out flawlessly.  I love the blue and white mesh look which is complemented by a dewy makeup. Simple but strong.

Jessica Hart – Azzedine Alaia

Bavna earrings and a Mattia Cielo ring

Defnitely a very safe look but the ensemble is stunning. I have a bias towards lace and if the lace is in a rich boudour maroon color, it definitely wins my heart. I like that she has added a top bun with light blue eye makeup which gives her a slightly more avant-garde look to suit the theme of the evening.

Nina Dobrev – Marchesa

With Charlotte Olympia Heels

Nina Dobrev looks like a glamorous Bella from Beauty and the Beast. Her golden skin tone and dull gold gown with shimmering beads and floral appliqué is so princessy.

Apparently post the gala, Nina took the help of Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman for a quick dress makeover for a night long of dancing. The designer altered the dress from a gown to a bubble skirt thus securing the perfect cocktail look. (see below)

Naomi-harris- Burberry

With Burberry clutch, Christian Louboutin shoes and Messika jewlery.

This is definitely one of my other favourites this year. The entire look is so well put together. The choker lariat necklace is simple and keeps the focus on tje stunning embroidered  futuristic looking outfit. The silk organza gown is made entirely of chain-mail sequins, accented with handmade metallic yarn blossoms with glass beads (paired with vintage Fred Leighton diamonds).

Love the print and colors on Naomi which gives her a slightly ethnic but a modern regal feel. If there was one outfit I could purchase from the Met Gala, it would definitely be this one.

Claire danes – Zac Posen

With Eva Fehren jewelry

Claire Danes looked like Cinderella.Period. Her gown was the most talked about outfit of the night as it was trimmed with fiber optic lights and accessorized with Eva Fehren jewelry. A spectacular sight in the dark. Truly shows us when fashion and tech work together, it leads to marvellous creations.

Jessica Chastain -Prada

With Piaget jewelry.

This dress features on this list only because of it’s color. Jessica nailed the jewel color for her cool skin tone. The sapphire dress with lace trim may not make her look ‘fashion meets tech’ kind but definitely gives her a very royal look. I love her chandelier earring and blue red lipstick which complements the dress elegantly.

Celebs Who Could have done it better :

This part of the article is not to put down any outfit. Each style is personal and I commend all those who are able to confidently wear their ensemble. This portion is merely to highlight what some of the celebrities could have done better in terms of style, color and fit so our readers can get some fashion learning of their own.

Selena Gomez – Louis Vuitton

I love Selena Gomez, but here, it almost seems she forgot she was at the Met Gala. There are so many things that needs to be fixed here. For starters, the outfit is too casual. The ledgy leather does not match up to the casual dress underneath. Above and everything, the shoes are an utter mismatch and the makeup is way too simple.

What she could have done better :

Worn the leather top with a pair of leather pants or logn slit skirt, boots or stilettos and a smokey eye look to meet the theme of the gala and yet look dressed up.

Madonna – Givenchy

I have always admired Madonna for believing in herself and carrying any outfit with aplomb. I am all pro-choice and believe that everyone has the right to wear whatever they feel like. I applaud Madonna for that. However, considering her dynamic persona, something more dramatic would have been a better fit for her rather than a latex bohemian meets tarot card reader lace button- up shirt dress look.

What she could have done better : Something more dramatic in terms of her outfit and less of accessories. Think Met Gala 2013 or Grammy’s 2014 (click link to see the image)

Kristen Stewart – Chanel

I’m not sure what happened to Kristen Stewart’s style. She used to look stunning and sleek in pantsuits perfecting the laidback androgynous looks. The texture of the outfit mixed with the loud eye makeup makes her look like a a grunge star gone wrong.

What she could have done better : Had this been a jumpsuit and she went simple on her eye with her hair open or tied in a top bun, she would have definitely stood out.

Nicki Minaj- Moschino

Knowing Nicki’s love for statement making pop colored outfits , I don’t have so much problem with the dress as much as I have with the fit. The sparkly finish and diamond embellishment dress with crossover straps would have been nicer had it been more flowy and made her look more comfortable.

What she could have done better : Either the straps on the neck or the hand gloves have to go to make this outfit more doable. An A-line maxi bottom with the figure hugging top could have also worked.

Demi Lovato -Moschino

I have honestly no idea what is going on with this dress. Demi Lovato looks fierce but her outfit colors are so mismatched.

What she could have done better : A complete silver gown, or a full yellow would have worked better for her. With this kind of makeup and body silhouette, a monotone tailored number would been a better pick just just like what she wore at the 2015 Billboard Awards or the coral pink number at the VMA 2015.

Kerry Washington – Marc Jacobs

I have always mentioned that Kerry Washington is a warm skin tone and looks beautiful in bright colors like orange, mustard or cherry red. She is so gorgeous and to bring out her best features, she should opt for warm colors. Even her hair color is on the cooler side. Auburn or brown highlights rather than this purple-red tone would have suited her better.

What she could have done better : Warmer and brighter colors please Kerry. For an outfit so bold, the makeup should have been a simple nude makeup with her hair tied up. She could have also left the hand gloves and opted for simple accessories. When the plunging neckline dress is to make a statement, keep everything else simple.

Alicia vikander – Louis Vuitton

Not my favourite at all. There is too much going on the with dress – shiny red, gold lining, bronze, black ruffle and white. Your eyes wander everywhere with the contrasting textures. To top that, the red lacy shoes don’t help either.

What she could have done better : Leaving her hair open and simple heels would have made the look tad better.

Kylie Jenner- Balmain

I like the outfit and I like Kylie’s makeup and hair too. The reason this dress features on my list is that it looks overused. Many people like Kim Kardashian, Alessandra Ambrosis, Jourdan Dunn, etc wore a similar silhouette Balmain dress. Knowing Kylie, it is time she takes more risk with her outfits. As much as the gown is sparkly and gorgeous, I don’t think it’s the best for Kylie’s body shape. It makes her top half look longer than her lower half.

What she could have done better : Had this dress been shorter and shown more leg, it would have looked more proportionate for her body.

Hailee Steinfield – H&M

I like the fact that a fast retailer like H&M was so popular in a high-fashion centric event like the Met Gala. It emphasizes the fact that the gap between high couture and fast fashion is being bridged.

This H&M number however is not very flattering on Hailee’s silhouette. But more than the dress, I just couldn’t recognise Hailee. She is someone who usually looks very young and fresh. However, this dark goth makeup not only clashes with her outfit, it also makes her look older than she is. The other problem I have is with the necklace.  A simple stone pendant or no necklace would have made her look more classy.

What she could have done better :  A fresher makeup perhaps in the tone of coral or peach would have made her look more vibrant. Open hair with side parting and no necklace. I preferred her Met Gala 2015 look.

Irina Shayk- Givenchy

Irina Shayk is gorgeous. I just hope she had chosen something more glamorous to go with her image rather than simple periwinkle stars and stripes. Both her outfit and makeup is too simple for an event like Met gala. It would have been great for a day event.

What she could have done better : A flowy gown in the color of her corset or a brighter makeup with some accessories would have made her look like a million bucks. With amazing eyes like Irina, she should opt for jewel toned outfits on the red carpet like what she wore for Cannes and AMFAR.
