Michelle Yeoh gave one of the greatest performances of the 2000s in the film. It’s been 15 years since Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon hit theaters. And while that might seem a little late for a sequel, Hollywood has been obsessed with returning to dormant films for new franchise opportunities. Upon first inspection, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2 doesn’t seem like the most obvious cash grab for Netflix, but there’s a good chance this movie will play big overseas.

When Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was released in 2000, it became the most successful foreign film in American history.

The highly stylized action sequences, Ang Lee’s dynamic direction and the inimitable performances from Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun-fat captivated American critics and audiences alike, forever changing the relationship between US and China’s film industries.

The trailer for the the next installment in the epic saga, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny” was released today and it delivers all the action goodness you’ve been hoping for.

Though lacking the presence of Chow Yun-fat and Zhang Ziyi for obvious (spoiler-ridden) reasons; the great Michelle Yeoh is back in action, joined by the equally great Donnie Yen and Glee‘s Harry Shum Jr. Plus, it’s directed by Yuen Woo-ping, a big name in martial arts choreography, and partially produced by The Weinstein Company. So it’s at least clear this piece has some level of prestige behind it.

Based on the novel, Iron Knight, Silver Vase, by Wang Dulu, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny tells a story of love, a legendary sword and one last opportunity at redemption, and if the new trailer is anything to go by, it promises to be an epic martial arts battle between good and evil.

Michelle Yeoh reprises her role as Silent Wolf, along side Harry Shum Jr (Glee, Revenge of the Green Dragons), Jason Scott Lee (Seventh Son, Hawaii Five-O), Roger Yuan (Bulletproof Monk), Eugenia Yuan (Revenge of the Green Dragons).   Michelle Yeoh is back as Yu Shu-Lien with Donnie Yen playing Silent Wolf with the former being called back into battle with a new evil lord threatens the world, that is if he gets ahold of a legendary sword that will ensure his victory.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon made nearly $250m on its release in 2000 and won the best foreign-language Oscar the following year, with three more awards in technical categories.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny will become available on Netflix and select IMAX theatres on 26 February.
