FREMONT — Hopewell-Loudon’s Alex Wood and Chet Swartzmiller went 1-2 in the boys 3,200-meter run to power the Chieftains to the boys team title at the Division III district track meet Saturday at Fremont Ross High School.
The top four finishers in each event qualified for this week’s Division III regional meet at Tiffin’s Frost-Kalnow Stadium.
Hopewell-Loudon’s Noah Breidenbach, Zach Clouse, Marcus Ardner and Ben Bodart were third in the 1,600 relay (3:33.77), the final event of the day, to give the Chieftains a 101-98 winning margin over Woodmore. Elmwood (53½) was fourth. Arcadia (26) was ninth, North Baltimore (13) 13th and Fostoria St. Wendelin (10) placed 15th.
Wood crossed the finish line in 10:24.58 while Swartzmiller posted a time of 10:32.65 in the 3,200. The Chieftains also got a runner-up finish in the 800 relay from Elancio Velasquez, Patric Gase, Eli Tooker and Breidenbach in a time of 1:33:01.
Elmwood freshman CJ Jenkins was second in the 1,600 in a season-best time of 4:38.69, while Arcadia’s Clint Recker qualified for regionals in both hurdles races after finishing third in the 110 high (16.23) and fourth in the 300 intermediate (41.63) hurdles.
St. Wendelin’s Nick DeHaven advanced by placing fourth in the 3,200 (10:35.66).
Evergreen took the girls District I team crown by a 102½-82 margin over Tiffin Calvert. Carey (76½), Fostoria St. Wendelin (72), McComb (65), Hopewell-Loudon (49) and Leipsic (48) followed the top two in the standings. Arcadia and Continental tied for ninth with 41 points.
There was plenty of individual success for area girls teams in the girls District I meet.
Continental’s Paige Ordway was the top area performer, winning the 300 hurdles (46.22) and long jump (15-5¾) while adding a runner-up showing in the 100 hurdles (16.20).
Leipsic got district titles from Holly Averesch in the discus (142-4) and Brenna Schroeder in the 400 (1:00.65).
Carey’s Sara Craig, Gwen Wentling, Lauren Wenner and Amber Spurlock teamed up to win the 800 relay (1:47.90) and St. Wendelin’s Sophia Volpe finished first in the 1,600 (5:35.04).
Toledo Christian won the girls District II meet with 120 points. North Baltimore, the only area team in the field, was 10th with 23 points.
Kenzie Carles was fourth in the pole vault (8-6) and Megan Ernsberger finished fourth in the 100 hurdles (16.99) to advance for the Tigers.
