ARCHAEOLOGIST DISCUSSES HIS DISCOVERIES

Oct. 12

It has been 26 years since archaeologist David R. Bush first began clearing brush and trees to discover what remained of the Civil War-era prison on Johnson’s Island. What started out as a contract job turned into a life’s passion that has added much to the historical record of Ohio’s most significant Civil War site. As director of Heidelberg University’s Center for Historic & Military Archaeology, Bush has devoted much of his career to Johnson’s Island prison, the only Union prison built specifically to house Confederate officers.
