Prediction results 0115 DET - Game 45 plus Qstats/Box/Recap/PBP

$Bill <news@todbe.com>: Jan 15 09:08PM -0800

Aided by a buzzer beater in each of the 1st 3 qtrs, at least 2 bad calls by the
refs and in your face D, DET manages to get the W. Only 4 guys in DFs. I
thought Clarkson was the best O and had the least minutes, but may have had an
ankle problem late. Lou and Dlo were decent on O, but Deng, Randle, Ingram and
Young didn't get it on O. Lakers shoulda won this one, but nothing was really
going their way. 97-102 Lakers lose by 5.

Recap from http://espn.go.com/nba/recap?gameId=400900033

LOS ANGELES -- Tobias Harris scored 23 points and hit a decisive
3-pointer with 30.5 seconds to play, and the Detroit Pistons snapped a
three-game losing streak with a 102-97 victory over the Los Angeles
Lakers on Sunday night.

Marcus Morris scored 23 points and Andre Drummond had 15 points and 17
rebounds for the Pistons. They wrapped up their longest trip of the
season by beating the Lakers at Staples Center for the first time in
seven tries since Nov. 14, 2008.

Detroit barely hung on down the stretch of a back-and-forth game with
the Lakers, who lost their fourth straight despite 26 points from Lou
Williams.

D'Angelo Russell added 20 points for the Lakers. They have lost 20 of
25 since their 10-10 start to coach Luke Walton's first season.

After Lakers rookie Brandon Ingram missed a free throw that would have
tied it with 1:33 left, the teams traded missed shots before Harris
grabbed a deflected ball from Ingram, beat the shot clock and bailed
the Pistons out of an aimless possession with his 3-pointer in front of
the Lakers' bench.

The Pistons won without two injured starters, wrapping up their
five-game road trip with a bounce-back performance from their 33-point
loss at Utah on Friday, their worst defeat of the season.

TO THE BANK

The Lakers led by 14 points during the first half, but Detroit stayed
in it with 15 points from Morris and strong play by Drummond, who
banked in a half-court shot at the halftime buzzer. Drummond held his
hand aloft from the moment he let it go, and even Lakers fans had to
applaud when it erased Los Angeles' lead and put Detroit up 59-57 at
halftime.

ZU WORKS

Lakers rookie center Ivica Zubac had four points and five rebounds in
nine minutes while playing in his third basketball game in two days.
Zubac played two minutes in a loss to the Clippers on Saturday
afternoon and then was assigned to the Lakers' D-League affiliate in
time to put up 20 points and 10 rebounds in their game on Saturday
night.

TIP-INS

Pistons: Kentavious Caldwell-Pope missed his second straight game with
a strained rotator cuff. ... Drummond's 3-pointer was his second of the
season. ... F Jon Leuer missed his fourth straight game with a sore
right knee.

Lakers: Tarik Black went to the locker room in the third quarter after
apparently injuring his ankle under the basket. ... Williams converted
a four-point play in the second quarter. ... The Lakers have played 45
games already this season, most in the NBA by a long shot. They've
played nine games in January already. ... Luol Deng returned to the
lineup after sitting out Saturday's loss to the Clippers for rest. He
Deng scored two points in 36 minutes. Fellow starter Julius Randle had
two points in 32 minutes.

UP NEXT

Pistons: Host Hawks on Wednesday.
Lakers: Host Nuggets on Tuesday.

Pistons, Lakers struggle heading into Sunday matchup
STATS LLC - 2017-01-15T01:07:34Z

Bad things come in threes for the Detroit Pistons.

Perimeter defense has been a major issue for the Pistons in recent weeks,
including their current five-game West Coast swing. Opponents have hit 49.6
percent (59 of 119) of their long-range shots during the first four games,
a major reason why Detroit has lost three straight. The Pistons (18-24)
will try to salvage the final game of the trip when they face the Los
Angeles Lakers at Staples Center on Sunday night.

Utah fired in 16 of 31 3-point attempts on Friday in a 110-77 blowout that
left Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy disgusted with himself and his defense.

"We can't stop anybody. We just can't," Van Gundy lamented. "I mean for the
first 21 games we were the second-best defensive team in the league and now
we are one of the worst. I'm frustrated. Not with our players, I'm
frustrated with myself that I can't figure this out. I mean, we literally
can't stop anyone, ever."

Detroit has dropped to 25th in defensive 3-point field-goal percentage
(37.4) while its offense ranks 24th in that category (34.1). The defense
completely collapsed in the second half against the Jazz, who outscored the
Pistons 65-34 after the break.

"We got to defend. We got to make someone miss," Detroit point guard Reggie
Jackson said. "I don't know what it is. We'll do it for about a total of
half of a game, whether it be the first, third, or be the middle of the
first, middle of the third, half the fourth. We're just not playing
together for 48 1/8minutes 3/8. It's really coming back to bite us each and
every night."

Making matters worse is that the Pistons are playing without two starters.
Shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell Pope is expected to miss his second
straight game with a shoulder sprain, while power forward Jon Leuer is
sidelined with a bone bruise on his right knee.

Los Angeles (15-29) hasn't played any better this week, losing its last
three games by an average of 25.7 points. The Lakers were dominated by the
Clippers on Saturday afternoon, 113-97. They allowed the Clippers to shoot
52.2 percent and got overpowered by center DeAndre Jordan, who piled up 24
points and 21 rebounds.

The Lakers' promising duo of forward Julius Randle and point guard D'Angelo
Russell combined for just nine points on 3-for-14 shooting while making
five turnovers. Russell has been held to single digits in his last three
games.

"We need him to be more aggressive and be the player we know he is capable
of being," coach Luke Walton to the Los Angeles Daily News.

Walton was unhappy with the offense in general, especially a starting unit
which only produced 41 points.

"We need to see sharper execution," he said to the Daily News. "The way we
started the game tonight, our bigs weren't rolling and we weren't setting
screens. Our spacing was 1/8bad 3/8. When we did get open, there was
nothing to do with the ball there."

Forward Luol Deng is expected to return to the lineup on Sunday. He was
rested on Saturday by Walton on the front end of the back-to-back.

The teams split the two-game series last season, with each winning on their
home floor.
