He's been with the Dolphins for 16 years, and the Dolphins director of
college scouting for nine years. Let that sink in for a minute. The
mastermind behind all of the wonderful draft picks of the past nine
years, is now the head honcho. Here are the picks from rounds 1-3 during
that time:

Ted Ginn
John Beck
Samson Satele
Lorenzo Booker
Jake Long
Phillip Merling
Chad Henne
Kendall Langford
Vontae Davis
Pat White
Sean Smith
Patrick Turner
Jared Odrick
Koa Misi
John Jerry
Mike Pouncey
Daniel Thomas
Ryan Tannehill
Jonathan Martin
Olivier Vernon
Michael Egnew
Dion Jordan
Jamar Taylor
Dallas Thomas
Will Davis
Ja'Uwan James
Jarvis Landry
Billy Turner
DeVante Parker
Jordan Phillips

Of 30 picks, I see one All-Pro season (Long); three Pro-Bowlers (Long,
Pouncey, and Vontae Davis); a handful of average players (Ginn, Satele,
Merling, Sean Smith, Odrick, Misi, Tannehill, Vernon, James), a couple
of future stars (Landry and Parker), one unknown (Phillips), and about
15 busts.

Yeah, I feel SOOOO much better knowing that this guy is in charge. He
has a 50% success rate IN THE FIRST THREE ROUNDS.

Yep, I don't understand. More chicken shit than chicken salad on that menu.

I used to think they knew things I didn't.

I now believe they are in an eternal loop of boneheaded decisions.

It's The Offensive Line, Stupid. And It's the Coaching, Stupid.

tgowan <tgowan01@gmail.com>: Jan 03 04:10PM -0800

I read something earlier on this NG that characterized the Dolphins O Line as "stable." Fucking retard.

Everyone knows how I feel about the O Line. The other issue here, obviously, is coaching. When Queasy was hired, my wish was that we could have landed Jeff Fisher. He's a fantastic game-day coach. His guys play hard for 60 minutes. This is what we need. There's no telling how much talent is on this team until it's coached properly.

Time for some self-flagellation. Pain purifies.

Since Shula retired we suffered the following list of losers at HC:

1. Jimmy Pork Faced Satan Johnson--Jimmy was clearly out of his element. He was a championship caliber HC when he had 6 or 7 future Hall of Famers on the roster.

2. Dave Wannstedt--Dave was Queasy before Philbin was Queasy. Get a 3 point lead in the first quarter and try to nurse that puppy to a victory. He's the reason Ricky quit football.

3. Jim Bates--Who the fuck was Jim Bates? A good defensive coach that was a book marker for 7 games.

4. Nick Satan--As an NFL head coach, Nick Satan was clearly operating above the level of his competence. He couldn't even get the DB postion right, and that was his forte.

5. Cam Cameron--Good OC in San Diego. Crappy head coach in Miami. Cam didn't leave much behind, except the Ted Ginn family legacy.

6. Tony Sparano--This is what you get when you elevate a position coach to the head coaching position, bypassing some pretty important stuff along the way. Tony did shove the Wildcat up Belicheat's ass, and for that I'll be forever grateful.

7. Todd Bowles--Coached Miami until the coffee got cold. Apparently he took the Miami Coaching Miasma with him...his nasty Jetsies played their way out of the playoffs today by losing to Buffalo. Way to represent!

8. Joe Philbin--Another coach not ready for primetime. Queasy didn't have the internal fire that it takes to be a great or even good HC. Queasy reminded me of a weak substitute teacher. He did just enough to make sure the kids didn't burn down the classroom.

9. Dan Campbell--Dan was handed a supremely large shit sandwich when Queasy got fired. Was he in over his head? Absolutely. Will he be a good head coach one day? Who cares. It ain't happening in Miami.

10. ?????--I'm tempted to say that it doesn't matter who the next Dolphins head coach is. There are so many problems with the team from the front office on down to the practice squad. But, a good coach with a good staff will certainly bear improvement. Get this right, or the team will backpedal for another 3 or 4 seasons. For that reason....

Terry Gowan says----"It's the coaching, stupid."

People may say I'm being weird here, but I think the current
circumstances favor the Dolphins "accidentally" getting the right guy.
Knowing nothing about what Tannenbaum might be inclined to do, I think
the GOOD news is that he won't be able to pursue some "big name"
candidate, even if he wanted to do so. That sort of big name individual
would be demanding power that Tannenbaum will not be willing to
relinquish. The pre-hiring of a GM to replace Hickey sort of puts that
sentiment in neon, don't you think?

IMHO the way the Dolphins succeed going forward is if they
serendipitously land some new coach who can ignore the environment and
build a good staff and team despite the limitations.

Yes, this is about luck.... it ALWAYS is about luck.

Chicken salad is better with no chicken shit in it.

This team has repeatedly addressed the OLine for seemingly decades now.

We have a potentially decent center, hopefully an improving RT and a
great LT when he isn't injured. Our guards blow Chunks. (Chunks is a dog)

Other than our OLine, our LBs and our DBs, we are in fine shape.

And please Lord, give me a FB!

And a TE that is great at *something*, anything!

Does anyone feel our scouting department will get better with Hickey
gone and Grier promoted?

We need more chicken!

Looking for a new HC

bob@bob.mail: Jan 03 05:48PM -0500

This should attract the best new candidates for HC.

Salary Cap Space Available: $-6.4 million

Dead Cap Space: $4.1 million

Pros: You have a cornerstone defensive tackle in Suh, a quality pass
rusher in Cameron Wake along with a young secondary. On offense you
have a stable offensive line, with the likes of Albert, Mike Pouncey,
and Ja'Wuan James. Over the years, they have spent a number of high
draft picks on the offensive line.

They went out and took DeVante Parker in last year's draft and
unfortunately injuries have slowed down his development this season.
If he can develop into a top tier wideout, the Dolphins could be in a
good position to take a leap forward.

The Dolphins should allocate some resources towards improving the left
guard position, tight end position and the linebacking core. They can
improve their cap situation by making a couple of roster cuts. They
can cut Greg Jennings, Jordan Cameron and Dion Jordan and gain an
additional $14.7 million in cap space to spend on more long term
players that could make more of impact on this roster both in the long
and short term.

Cons: The Dolphins currently have the least amount of cap space of any
NFL team going into the 2016-2017 offseason. They have to get rid of
$6.4 million in contracts just to get under the $150 million cap
ceiling. This is another example of a team losing sight of the future
to put their names in the headlines. They win during free agency but
continue to lose out on the field. With such poor cap management just
which just screams of fiscal irresponsibility, Dolphins' fans would be
hard-pressed to believe the front office can build a winning roster.

The signing of Ndamukong Suh and Jordan Cameron this last offseason
have the Dolphins behind the eight ball in their ability to revamp the
roster. Both players are two of the highest paid players at their
positions.

Whomever takes over the reins will have to work on developing Ryan
Tannehill into a quality starting caliber NFL quarterback. This will
be a tough test and one that I'm not sure is attainable. Tannehill has
made some improvements in his short tenure as a starter, but he lacks
the functional abilities to be a top tier quarterback in the NFL. The
Dolphins would be wise to start looking towards grooming his successor
by having a young quarterback sit, learn and watch the next season and
take over the starting spot in 2017.

With a lot of money spent on defense, the Miami Dolphins finished with
the 24th ranked overall defense in the NFL. With such a poor return on
their investment, it makes you wonder if the Dolphins' scouting
department is capable of locating quality players in the late rounds
or in undrafted free agency. The next coach will need to create a more
advanced system of finding and developing young talent.

> department is capable of locating quality players in the late rounds

The most negative aspect of the Dolphins' situation is how the potential
HC candidates will perceive the Tannenbaum controlled front office.

If they go after someone like Shula, I believe they can find a high
quality candidate that will accept the job. If they try to lure some
"brand name" established coach, there likely would be better options
that the candidate could pursue.

BTW, Parker has clearly shown that he has the goods and has shown solid
chemistry with Tannehill. There are holes to be filled - mostly the
same ones that the Dolphins chose to ignore in 2014 - but there is a
talent nucleus on both sides of the ball that should intrigue any coach
with the ability to envision what he could do even in the relative short
term.

If a coach looked at the defense, with Suh, Phillips, Hewitt, Jones,
Shelby, Fede, Lippett and the offense with Miller, Landry, Parker,
Tannehill, Ajayi, Pouncey, Albert and James and said "nah... that roster
is for shit" then I give him little chance of finding a team that would
satisfy his demanding standards for a starting point.

Interesting and incomplete commentary here, written by one who doesn't
follow MIA I'd guess.

Clay walked to BUF for a guaranteed $24.5 million with twice the annual
salary and five times the guarantee given to Cameron (twice the
guaranteed on a "per year" basis).

FWIW.

So I Had to Work Today..

Does anyone have a link to a replay site? I know there used to be one

It actually sounds like the younger players performed well.

Any thoughts?

I'm pretty sure it will be replayed on the NFL Network at some point
this week. They do offer (on the web) the complete access to all 256
games as replays via NFL.com - you could probably get a free trial to
see the game at no charge.

Those bootleg sites are not something I'm any good at.

At the risk of getting flamed, it was a good game for a number of
Dolphins players. If I say anything about the defense eating up the
Pats, it MUST be noted that the Brady Bunch did not come out and try to
bring their "A" game. It looked like they figured they could just walk
through the game and Miami would hand it to them. Once they tried to
rev it up, they couldn't get the fire to stay lit.

DeVante Parker had another really nice game. Landry was up and down,
but he was fiery in the second half. The Dolphins' defensive secondary
actually did a good job against what little aerial assault was thrown at
them. Brady spent a lot of time on the ground, so that is always
entertaining.

The Dolphins were poor on the ground most of the time, but Miller had at
least two very good runs that made up for a lot of stops for loss. This
was the most complete game the team has played since back in October.

Parker had a great game. Hewitt and Leppitt played well. Tannehill did too.
D played its best game. Vernon may be retarded.

Thank you Miami Dolphins for rubbing Tom Brady's face in the dog poop

"Kick 'em when they're down!" <emailer@att.net>: Jan 04 01:44AM

Tom Brady was sacked twice and knocked down at least half a dozen times
Sunday, and the New England Patriots missed a chance to clinch the No. 1
seed in the AFC playoffs when they lost to Miami.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady limped
noticeably after the team's season-ending 20-10 loss to the Miami
Dolphins, a result of taking a big hit from defensive lineman Ndamukong
Suh early in the second quarter.

"I'm pretty sore," Brady acknowledged after the game, "but it will be all
right."

Brady required medical attention on the sideline after the hit, with the
athletic training staff and medical staff re-taping his right ankle. He
didn't miss any time during the game, but the Patriots replaced him with
backup Jimmy Garoppolo on their final drive with 1 minute, 56 seconds
remaining when they were trailing 20-10.

Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said Sunday that the team is
"finalizing something" to make Chris Grier the Dolphins' new general
manager.

"I think very highly of Chris Grier," Ross said in the locker room
after Sunday's 20-10 win over the New England Patriots. "But we
haven't finalized it at this point."

Grier has been with the Dolphins for 15 years and has been their
director of college scouting for the past eight seasons. Grier joined
the Dolphins after spending five years with the Patriots.

The Dolphins fired former general manager Dennis Hickey on Saturday.
The Dolphins were 13-18 in Hickey's tenure.

New England sure came out with no sense of urgency or even seeming
interest. Now they have been stepping it up in the second half without
a lot of success.

I realize they can win this game in the last 40 seconds like they never
had a worry, but it sure seems like they are having trouble asserting
themselves now that they've decided to care about getting the win.

Personally, I'd prefer Miami get the better draft pick, but seeing the
looks of frustration on the Patriots sideline is awfully satisfying.

By fair shake I mean being treated decently by Ross. His firing was
telegraphed in public before it was official and his contribution to the
team has been largely positive. I compare this to the humiliation of
Sparano by Ireland/Ross. It impacts what any potential new hire might
think about coming to work for this organization.

Unrelated: I will now officially get off Hewitt's back. He's playing
really well today.
