I kinda liked that part - she's covering a lot of territory there

xyzzy <xyzzy.dude@gmail.com>: Sep 14 05:10PM -0700

"Democrat Party" is one of those phrases that tells me to completely discount the rest of what the person is saying.

Another one is "teabagger" btw.

GASP - in a political ad?

Sacre bleu!

You must have a tough time come election season

xyzzy <xyzzy.dude@gmail.com>: Sep 14 05:38PM -0700

What? You don't discount the vast majority of what political ads say?

Well....yes, but not just on buzzwords - moreso just the totality of them all

there's a difference between saying "your policies are wrong" and "now I'm going to insult you".

I dislike Hillary so much I'd consider voting for a reasonable Republican, should one get nominated. If, for example, Hillary had won the 2008 nomination I might have voted for McCain...if McCain had a different running mate.

so when Fiorina did well in the second tier debate I figured I'd consider her. But having watched that ad I now rate her as worse than Hillary. That might play to the Republicans but I saw it too and it was a total turn-off that cost her a potential vote.

I suppose it doesn't matter since she won't be the nominee, but you never know. She might get tabbed for VP.

You really found what she said that offensive? That's interesting....to my ears, sounded pretty innocuous and played nicely off of the Dem's desire to portray themselves "as the party of women".

Seemingly hear faaaaaaar worse quite frequently (from all sides) - I mean the whole "war on women" meme, is to me, far more offensive than saying "Hey Dems"

But - your mileage obviously varies - and that's cool

FWIW, I thought her riff there was pretty clever - the whole "women aren't a special interest group - we're the majority"

twill be interesting to see how she plays out - Trump's a giant asshole and none of the other candidates really stand out. A ticket of Carson/Fiorina would certainly disrupt the "usual narrative" - especially if the Dems ended up running a couple old, white men

Anyhoo - I found this to be a clever ad - emasculating Trump while also reminding folks who she's running against in the end. Far better than most at least. (low threshold)

well let's go back to "teabagger". If you heard a Democrat run an ad that says "we're going to send a message to the teabaggers..." would you think "there's someone I could vote for!"? I would think not.

Teabagger's a lot more hardcore than mere Republican

I wouldn't disqualify a candidate for saying "HEY - GOP blah blah blah..." If so, I would never be able to vote for a dem - and I have in the past and will in the future.

You've got to remember tho, I live in Madison - there's a section of the populace who blanketstatements all the freakin' time - so I'm kind of inured to it and tend to not even notice.

I'm sure I could riff on all sorts of stereotypes about these asswipes...but what's the point?

"Tourism is out of control," William Borgest, one of many who were outraged, wrote on the SITRAMINAE Facebook page. "National and foreign tourists literally do what they want. They believe that the country is an amusement park with free access. There is no respect for the nature nor its processes."

my horrible sports weekend

Eric Ramon <ramon.eric@gmail.com>: Sep 14 04:53PM -0700

I was born in New York City, spent some time in Los Angeles and now live in Portland.

So the Ducks lost to Michigan State in a game they really could have and probably should have pulled out. Then my favorite baseball team, the California Angels (hey!) were about to sweep Houston and get back in the AL West race when "our" closer, Huston Street, gave up 5 runs with 2 outs. Finally my pro football team, the Giants....jeez, what a cluster$#^% at the end of that game. Moron coach, moron QB.

That was just a Miamode firable decision by Coughlin - and Manning should be ashamed for not checking out of the play. At worst, you run the clock down and kick the field goal - you cannot throw the ball there - much less "throw it away"

Opening a check cashing/pawn shop

Casinos, cash advances and pawn shops are not a shoestring business as
I see it. The raw material is cash and the only product is cash. Pawn
shops often go broke because their cash is tied up in items that have
not been picked up or not sold.

>My biggest shortfall is basic experience in either capacity...

Be assured that your customers will not have a shortfall in basic
experience with those operations.

gambling is a disease or, if I'm being charitable, a bad habit. It's not like people go "ho-hum, now I'll take up golf or checkers". They'll keep going to casinos because they think they'll win or because they badly need to win.

jb, I looked into on a superficial level(I never actually got down to the nitty gritty of the numbers), and when I really came down to it I had to ask myself the following question: given that we only have one life on this earth, do I really want to spend part of it in a business that is overall detrimental to fellow humans and preys upon the less fortunate? because lets be real that's what these places do. You and I don't cash our checks there- there is a reason for that. Furthermore, the pawn shop angle of things inevitably leads to an underworld or crime, dirty money, and dirty goods. Sure a businessman can run it on the up and up technically, but you're still going to be dealing with a lot of dirty goods.
I decided that the answer was no(to the question above), so I didn't pursue it any further.

this....I think the connection between casino and check cashing need isn't a strong one.

Check cashing, like anything else, is a business. People who are 'down and out' and don't have access to traditional services are going to shop around for the lowest rates. What rates you get for cashing those checks completely depend on what sort of checks(as part of your protocol) you are willing to cash. If you want to charge more per check, you're going to have to be open to cashing the type of checks you will occasionally get burned on. if you want to only cash checks that are going to go through without a hitch 10000/10000 times, then you aren't going to be able to demand top premium. it's a tradeoff.
