Mayweather by unanimous decision

Whippet <drew@technologist.com>: May 02 09:55PM -0700

Floyd just too slippery for Pac. Escapes the ropes as one commentator put it "like an otter slipping out of a tub of Nutella".

Will this be enough to put boxing back on the map?
I think not. Pretty bloodless stuff.

I noticed Agassi and Graf in the audience.

Why not ? He was quite successful, a dedicated professional, very disciplined in his private (and professional) life. I think he was quite a good role model, esp. comparing him to Mac, Connors, Becker etc. He was dull, but he carried himself quite well otherwise.

What does it tell about SE Asia that they were fans of Lendl ? That they respect good role models, I believe.

Yeah, he was super disciplined in his private life. He started dating his wife when she was 13! Great discipline! (sarcasm)

You hit the nail on the head. He was dull. You certainly go for the dull players don't you? ;) It was great that he was very professional and hard working but he had a public personality like my kitchen counter.

> What does it tell about SE Asia that they were fans of Lendl ? That they respect good role models, I believe.

That they like boring tennis players with no style and grace and because of that they must be devoid of personality? ;)

North America had it right when it came to Lendl---Zzzzzzzz! After Borg retired, Lendl sure as hell did not capture my interest much.

I was never a fan of Lendl myself... but, he certainly was more intelligent than most of the tennis players active in his era OR SPORTS FIGURES GENERALLY REALLY... I used to actually enjoy his quibs and cutting comments to otherwise clueless reporters and interviewers when they got edgy or frankly asked him questions that they wouldn't have ask McEnroe or Connors or Borg... and at the time, you could see his mind almost turning; he must have been thinking, 'what's up with the interrogation?' Yes, he was a bit defensive, and yet, the American media frankly weren't ready, typically, to deal with intelligent athletes... they 'tended' to love it dulled down or comically silly, anything cartoonish and obvious and befitting the caricature of a pro athlete... That's where Bob Costas was a breath of fresh air when he came into broadcasting in the 1980s (though he's shadow of himself now days)... an intelligent and generally thoughtful media presence was very much welcome AND HIS PRESENCE DID shift the typology of sports broadcasters for the better on American TV...

This implies that Lendl as an "intelligent athlete" would be popular today because the American media is ready for that? Think again. Lendl would not be popular (relatively speaking)in any generation for a variety of reasons.

It is hilarious that you consider Lendl dull but think Borg was exciting. He couldn't even recite "Nothing performs like a Saab" without sounding like a robot.

I used to root for Mac and Connors when they played him, but the bristly Czech and his acerbic barbs grew on me. I went to see him play Wilander at a tournament in the mid-1990s, and my friends and I were about the only ones cheering for Lendl (Lendl won. I recently found out this was the final meeting between the two).

Given the fact that he was mostly cheered against wherever he played in N.America, and against nearly most opponents (I know folks who called him a Commie etc.), I think he handled it very well. Never let it get to him, or vented any frustration on the crowds.

Yes, Borg was not Mr. Personality but on court he was so cool, calm and graceful how could you not like him? He was the antithesis of that ball-bashing unattractive Czech robot Lendl.

But Borg and Federer are my absolute favorites.

I like the most for various reasons, Borg, Federer, Agassi and Nadal. The rest put me to sleep compared to them.

And apparently he started "dating" her when she was 17 and he was very married. Seriously, this guy Wawrinka sounds like a real dweeb. Mirka's rancor makes a lot of sense now.

Oh please! Ever hear of something called a condom? A few years ago that guy would have been lucky to get laid (before the fame from the slam win.) He has a face like a cheese grater.

"Dating" has become such a passé euphemism that it makes me wince, especially in cases like this. He's jamming his gnarled Polish pole into her--end of story. It's not a John Hughes romance, for God's sake.

Ha ha ha! Yes exactly. That is why I put the word dating in quotes. They aren't dating, they are schtooping like rabbits! It is not "Breakfast at Tiffany's."

Wasn't Dubya a jet pilot with the National Guard?
That was definitely more dangerous than 80 % of the assignments those guys had who went to Vietnam.

BTW, what did Bill Clinton and Obama do in the military?
