So Suh Me

euphemism <euphemism@mindspring.com>: Mar 09 02:15PM -0500

For some reason I feel compelled to defend the Dolphins' signing of Suh.
It's not like any of us were allowed to offer an opinion on the team
signing this guy. This move is 100% on Ross, for better or worse.

Suh has been a non-issue for me in the past, though my opinion of him
has been essentially negative. If I have ever commented on him it was
undoubtedly something about one of his numerous dirty moves on the field.

It was a major surprise to hear that the Dolphins were pursuing him. My
initial sense was that it was a bullshit story. The Dolphins were not
supposed to be major players in the 2015 free agency game because they
were pinched up to the cap. Now, here they are signing the biggest name
in free agency and giving him a contract that puts him at the very top
of the NFL millionaires.

As far as I'm concerned this was a very risky decision and one which
could easily drag this team down based on injury and/or player attitude.
At the same time, making such a move shows a commitment by the team to
try to push this team back to a position they have not held in many
years. The Dolphins have not shown great finesse in dealing with high
risk, high maintenance players. This guy needs to be managed and
controlled or he could blow up in their face.

I will choose to judge Suh as a Dolphin. We all know that, if nothing
else, Joe Philbin isn't going to condone the type of over the top
nastiness that typifies how people think of Suh. I have no knowledge
how the head coaches that have run the show in Detroit dealt with Suh
and I will simply hope that the Dolphins staff will tell him to stay
within the rules and work to make that happen. My biggest doubt is
whether they have a coach with the sort of dominate personality that
could control this fellow.

If he continues to behave like a criminal, then I will look for the team
to be rid of him, regardless of the cost.

I think Miami will overpay for Suh. It seems they offered a price so
ridiculous, no one would compete. Will Ross et al regret this? No one
knows.
I remember no stories about Suh being a problem in the locker room or in
the city of Detroit. Is he coachable? I don't know. Seems all his
problems have been on-field. I've addressed that elsewhere and won't
bore readers again. High maintenance? Again, I've seen no articles on
it. I just don't know.
I have to admit, if he stays healthy and eligible, he will be of
significant benefit to the D. Run D - better. No one should be
surprised if teams run to the side away from him but he'll help. He
should help the pass rush in two ways. One, by getting pressure up the
middle - a strategy totally absent last year. Two, by decreasing the
double-teams on Vernon and Wake. That certainly sounds enjoyable.
LBs should be cleaner. Time for QB to throw should decrease. All this
sounds good to me.
Realistically, getting rid of him may be a problem. If he sells LOTS of
tickets and trinkets, he much more secure. If he is something other
than the Suh of previous years, cutting him would be lethal. If he's a
cancer, the FO should know that already. I like the idea of signing
Suh. I'm just REAL afraid of the cost.

I'm going on record as saying this is the best signing the Dolphins have had since Dan Marino.

He will make EVERYONE on defense better just like Marino did to the offense.

PS: To all the peeps worried about Suh's "character", remember why Marino was available when Shula picked. Bout fucking time they got somebody that plays with a passion and wants to win.

Sound familiar?

Familiar is the problem. What's real familiar is the big deals going
down sideways.

I agree that this has the potential to be huge for Miami, too bad
there's not a better HC in place to exploit this high-risk move.

I am a fan of the Dolphins and want it to work. It is very hard to
imagine a positive could-be based on what recently has been.

Hope it works.

I'm concerned because of his position. Can D Tackle have that much
influence on a game/season? I hope so, but I'd be much more
comfortable if he was a DE than a DT. But I'm hopeful that Wake will
become a force if our opponents have to double on Suh.

Only after our brain trust figures out a way of losing him and still
taking the cap hit.

Like most non-Detroit fans, I'm sorta aware of some of his more egregious on-field incidents... but I could recall the specifics. So I went looking and found this article. Interesting stuff. I'll let everyone draw their own conclusions from it.

How to Write a Hit Piece on Ndamukong Suh

Here are some of the "highlights":

the third preseason game of his rookie season, when Suh grabbed Browns quarterback Jake Delhomme's face mask, then seemed to twist his neck as if screwing the cap off a bottle. There was the forearm to the back of Jay Cutler's head, the Andy Dalton body slam, and, of course, the quote calling an injury to Matt Ryan "karma."

the Thanksgiving smash-and-stomp of Green Bay's Evan Dietrich-Smith. And then, the next Thanksgiving, his encore: a flailing kick to Matt Schaub's groin

an elbow to Arizona lineman Eric Winston's head

Suh's latest fine: $100,000, the largest for on-field behavior in league history, for a low block against the Vikings' John Sullivan

he had nine personal foul penalties in his first two years. Also the fact that he has lost $374,294 to fines and suspensions, followed by the fact that his fellow players have twice voted him "Dirtiest Player in the NFL."

he has only two personal foul penalties in the last two years

Personally, I believe that's simply too much $ to invest in a single player/position. Unfortunately, this sounds like Ross is trying to get a "star" to promote... instead of actually building a legit contender.

On the plus side, we don't normally play on Thanksgiving or against
NFC North. Hopefully he makes Marcia very nervous.

Maturity? Hates the thoughts of losing big money? Whichever, shows he
can learn. Now he needs to shot for NO PFs in one year.

Let's make this interesting

rt <rt@nowhere.com>: Mar 09 10:30AM -0700

Assuming we actually sign Donkey Kong, let's go on record (assuming
dude survives training camp without season ending injury or stroke)
with guesses as to when his first multiple game suspension for
malicious intent to injure occurs:

I'll start...

I figure it will take until November for Donkey Kong to realize how
hopeless playing for Philbin is, and probably would like to structure
an extended Thanksgiving holiday. I say he stomps the facemask of
whatever QB plays for whatever team we play the second week of November.

Ah, the joy of speculation. My bet is not until regular season 2016.
Why? New team, for one. Change of scenery usually brings out the best
of troubled players. Also, only two of Suh's seasons have seen winning
records so he's not unaccustomed to losing and experiencing frustration.
For all the (justified) complaining we do here, there is a reasonable
argument Miami would have been a play-off team if Suh had been a
Dolphin, and that's WITHOUT any upgrades and WITH the injuries late in
the season. Points/gm. Last year Detroit averaged 22. Miami 25, with
a miserable OL. An upgrade to 'average' here and Suh's new team can
average 26 - something he has never seen. Finally, add in a (very)
little maturity. All that leads me to think Suh will avoid SOME
frustration and anger that heightens the likelihood of suspendable acts.
Wildcards? Queasy and the December slump. Either of these can change
my projection but I'm sticking to it.

He played for the Lions, what superbowl do you think they will ever
get close to. If we play the Pats the second week of November, I'm
all for it.

This signing scares me in two ways.
They are committing a hell of a lot of money to one player while others
needs have to be addressed and then name Albert Haynesworth comes to mind
after he signed a huge contract.

It does make for one hell of a defensive line for Miami though.

The only way that this makes ANY sense for Miami is that Suh's first dirty
play of the year is a vicious, devastating, after-the-whistle knee-twisting
hit in Brady that tears his ACL, MCL, etc. and knocks him out for the season
, , , maybe career. Probably Suh would get suspended for many weeks - maybe
even an entire season. But it would be a net win for Miami, and that is the
only way this makes any sense in helping the Dolphins win their division.

The Pats and Seahawks have demonstrated that in today's passing league,
besides a franchise QB the most important thing is a top notch secondary
that can cover receivers and make INTs. Seattle has the best secondary in
the NFL, and adding Revis was the key to the Pats finally getting back to
the top.

Suh cannot cover anyone.

I really respect that. I have HATED it when my team signed a POS and I was

Not So Fast Guys - NFL looking into early free agency deals

L J Alibi <ljmaxx51@gmail.com>: Mar 09 02:49PM -0700

NFL looking into early free agency deals

The Associated Press - By By BARRY WILNER - AP Pro Football Writer
3 hours ago

NEW YORK (AP) -- The NFL is looking into whether some teams entered agreements with 2015 free agents before they were allowed to do so.

The league sent a memo to the 32 clubs reminding them not to reach agreement with or sign any of the 2015 free agents until Tuesday at 4 p.m. EDT. The memo noted a "reported number of agreements."

Among those are big-money deals for Ndamukong Suh with Miami, Jeremy Maclin with Kansas City, and Frank Gore and Byron Maxwell with Philadelphia.

"At this time, the league office is beginning investigations into a number of reported agreements with clubs," the memo said. "Violations will be dealt with accordingly."

Teams were given a three-day window beginning Saturday to meet with representatives of free agents. The league's business year begins Tuesday and players can be signed after 4 p.m. ET. But in the wake of many reported contract agreements, the NFL issued the warning.

During this negotiating period, a team is allowed to submit a written summary of the club's negotiating position to a certified agent. That can include a potential signing bonus; length of the contract; the amounts of the signing bonus and yearly salary. The team also can adjust its position when the agent makes a counter-offer.

The idea behind the three-day negotiating period is to allow conversations between more teams and player agents, and, of course, to gauge a player's value on the open market.

With the salary cap increasing by more than $10 million this year, and with several teams having carry-over money to spend, the competition for free agents has been intense.

First, to be fair, I'm not rabidly hoping for Suh for the reasons you

expectation of selling tickets. So I'm not blindly wed to a position as
you are.
OTOH, Miami is much closer to being competitive than YOUR team.
Franchise QB? Pick almost any start. RTan beats out
RG-degraded-to-a-IV. Multiple needs? Yup. Poor coach? Yup.
Rebuilding? For how long? Owner? Yup, you have the experience to know
mediocrity (or worse) when you see it. And which team has a more

Worst free-agent signings in NFL history
Albert Haynesworth, Washington Redskins (2009)
Over the past decade and a half, no team had been more proactive in free
agency than the Redskins. The result was an expensive lesson that money
doesn't buy championships. Haynesworth is the gold standard of horrific
free-agent signings, and this pathetic play against the Philadelphia
Eagles on national television is his lasting legacy.
