BAD NEWS FOR SAN FRANCISCO BASEBALL FANS

KANSAS CITY (Rueters) -- They've
put the champagne on ice in the Kansas
City Royals' locker room
The Royals are virtually assured
of winning their first World Series in
29 years now that Stephen Hawking has
agreed to sing "God Bless America" for
the final two games.
"We're relieved," said Manager
Ned Yost. "Good ol' Steve did it before
and we know he can damn well do it again.
"True, the San Francisco Giants
lead the series, 3-2, but now we have
'em right where we what them."
Hawking's stirring rendition of
"God Bless America" for Game Three
helped to Royals win going away and
the team physician said his tonsils
are still in really good shape "and
he certainly can do it again."
As everyone knows, Hawking is the
famed astrophysicist and cosmologist
who, for the longest time, insisted
God didn't exist.
However, an accidental whack on
the head -- a low ceiling -- brought
Steve to his senses a few weeks ago
and transformed him into a born-again
Christian.
He also became God's No. 1 fan
after reading http://www.edconrad.org
on his computer back at his home in
Cambridge, England.
Incidentally, Steve's love of
baseball has a lot to with his
motor neuron disease (also known
as Lou Gehrig's Disease), honoring
one of the sport's all-time greats.

One of the worst parts of post season baseball is having to listen to
the dumb-ass callers on sports talk shows doing their predictable 2nd
guessing routines. Most of them don't have any valid reasons they just
look at what happened *after having the luxury of hindsight* and they'll
say something like 'Oh, Bochy left in the starter 2 batters two late'.
Yeah, it's easy to look at what happened then say that you would have
taken out the starter right before he gave up that irritating hit.
These are probably the same clowns who can't understand why a major
league hitter could get fooled by a major league pitch. They sit there
and watch the ball come in and hit the catcher's mitt, then spend 3
seconds thinking about it, then they say, 'Gee, why didn't he swing at
that?' Admittedly some batters are irritating in this regards, but the
point is, many of these fans who go overboard criticizing batters don't
seem to understand at all that they (the fans)are looking at what
happened *after* it happened. They aren't in the batter's box having to
react in milliseconds time (in real time).

Reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from Jim Bouton's
"Ball Four":

"He's only hitting .365. *Somebody's* getting him out".
(probably Rod Carew or Tony Oliva)

For that matter, it's between the batter and the pitcher, not the
observer. We can't know what they see, well, unless Joe Buck and
Harold tell us, lol.

When it comes to callers, give them an enema and bury them in a shoe
box. That should tell you what they are full of, jon. :)

I got so caught up in the game yesterday that I just left the computer
off, cranked up KNBR and enjoyed a great game.

Peavy pitching game #6

I'm far from being comfortable, but what are the alternatives?

Not counting MadBum, Peavy was our best option at the end of the regular
season and he pitched a good game in Washington (the only win so far
from a starter). Then two so-so games in Missouri (both losses - not
completely his fault, though).

His past history is a bit worrisome as he has never pitched six full
innings in a postseason game. But we don't need a complete game shutout
(although it would be nice and would solve all our problems:-), just a
solid game, possibly outpitching his counterpart.

There are no alternative, unless Bochy decides to start Petit.
Personally, I'd like to see Petit as a starter.

While I can understand how valuable he is as a long reliever, there's
a big lack of depth in the starting rotation. I can see him coming in
quick to put out a Royals scoring binge if Peavy falls apart.

Between Peavy, Hudson and Vogelsong, there aren't a lot of long inning
options.

THe Omar Infante factor

"benf802961@aol.com" <benf802961@aol.com>: Oct 27 03:13PM -0700

If/WHEN the Giants pull this off it may be due to Omar Infante. No team with Omar Infante on it can eliminate the Giants. In 2010 he was with the Braves. In 2012 the Tigers. Now the Royals.

ariess@bellsouth.net: Oct 27 04:32PM -0700

A game 6 win would be ideal. How about the giants nail this 100 mph pitching youngster right from the start of the first inning, and keep adding on to win on the road in blowout fashion. If that happens, and if Pence or the Panda has a major game on offense, who is the MVP of the series? Is it still Bumgarner? All this assuming that the giants win it. Of course if we do not then I expect the award will go to a Royal.

Why can't Pence and Bumgarner share MVP honors?

Is there any doubt about who should be the World Series MVP?

MVP awards are not given after five games, when the series is not over
yet. First of all, the MVP is usually a member of the WS winner.
Secondly, in the remaining games (hopefully in the remaining *game*),
something crazy can still happen.

Our offensive players are not offensively challenged in this series.
Hunter Pence leads the team in RBI and co-leads in run scored. Excellent
defense too. If we win the Series (first and foremost) and Pence has a
great finish line, he will get the MVP. Also Pablo is not out of the
picture (although he should do something closer to the Verlander game).

Think of 2010. Lincecum won two games (including the clincher - ok, the
opener was not his best performance), but Renteria homered twice, and
his second homerun basically gave us the Series.

But before talking of MVP(s), let's try to do something that the
Cardinals couldn't do in the other KC WS-experience and that ourselves
couldn't do against the Angels in the other All-Wild-Card WS: ahead 3-2,
win the clincher on the road.

Amen!

Something that both of those games have in common is that the team that
lost Game 6, went into the game expecting to win, and then melted down
in the late innings. And they never recovered, and neither Game 7 was
much of a contest.

I think this particular Giants team is unlikely to have that happen if
they don't win Game 6, but I am concerned about what happens if it a "we
wuz robbed" (as in '85) or "we screwed up (as in '02).

(BTW, I have no sympathy for the '85 Cardinals -- even though they got
jobbed on a bad call, it was one runner on an infield hit. They chose
to spend the rest of Game 6 complaining about that, rather than focusing
on closing out the game and the Series.)

We feel this way, don't we? However, we actually lost 4-1 and had the
tying run at the plate in the fourth (twice), in the sixth (once) and
even in the ninth (twice).

Manager of the year? Bruce Bochy!

They work when we win. They don't work when we lose :-)

Game-1 and Game-5 were basically solved by MadBum, so no particular
merit in them.

In Game-2, he used Machi and Strickland in the sixth and got burned. In
the same inning, Yost went to the top of his bullpen and won the game.
Bochy's choice was puzzling because in Game-2 of the NLCS he summoned
Affeldt to start the fifth.

In Game-3 he played safe in the top of the first with a runner at third
and one out, even with Cain got two strikes. Cain grounded out to
Crawford, Escobar scored and that run was paramount. In Game-4, same
inning, same situation, Yost moved the infield in. It was a moot point
when Posey walked, but showed more audacity (yesterday, though, he let
Pence score on a groundout).

A decision that made me gulp but worked fine in Game-4 was to let Machi
pitch to Dyson and Vargas. Machi somehow finished the inning without
further damage, Petit didn't have to bat in the bottom third (I know
that he later got a hit, but come on:-), Duffy did, got a hit and then
scored.

Overall, Bochy has shown too much faith in Strickland (and Machi too)
and little trust in Lincecum (and even Petit). For instance, he
preferred to test Strickland than Lincecum in Game-1.

But how he has used the left-fielders and the pinch-hitters so far
deserves a good mark.

Seasonal awards are given for regular season performance. What you do in
the postseason nets points for the Hall of Fame :-)

In principle, yes.

However, I think all the voting for season awards is done before the
playoffs begin, meaning that post-season contributions aren't counted.

All things considered, it would not surprise me if Matt Williams gets
that particular award, even if Bochy's post-season performance clearly
shows that he's the best manager this year.

'HD' for now. Let's get the final 'H' in KC :-)

However, I am not sure we'd like to face Holland, because it would
probably mean that KC is tied or ahead. If Holland ends his WS with just
two appearences, it shouldn't be too bad for us.
