As a young Melbourne school girl studying French, I always dreamed of going to Paris and indulging in an authentic pain au chocolate and my all time favourite food, crêpes :-).
Fast forward many years and I have been lucky enough to visit Paris quite a few times, but my coeliac disease diagnosis has made eating a bit more difficult, and walking past the many crêpe stands and seeing all the croissants at the breakfast buffet can make a visit feel like food torture!
However, gluten free Paris does exist! As in the UK, there are now quite a few places that cater for gluten free, including many 100% gluten free options*. I’ve had a number of requests for information on Paris, so this post is a compilation of the options I am aware of. Don’t forget your translation card if you haven’t got more than school French!
If you didn’t know, the last two numbers of Parisian postcodes indicate the arrondissement, with number one being the centre of Paris and they then spiral out in a clockwise direction. For some information on the different arrondissments in Paris, this is great summary.
*100% gluten free is noted, but as some things may have got lost in translation, please ensure you do your own checking!

Small organic cafe that specialises in vegetarian and gluten free meals (hot & cold) and sweet treats also available. Also some dairy free options. Take away pre-made salads available. See Facebook for daily specials.

I have visited this cafe for their buckwheat galettes, but alas no photo as it was pre-blogging days! It was exceptionally busy, so it is a good idea to book or go a bit outside of traditional meal times, but you still need to be prepared to wait. As I don’t speak French, I didn’t ask if there was a separate cooking area for the galettes, but I wasn’t sick after eating there.

From looking at a few reviews, I gather that over 50% of the sushi options are now gluten free (using Google Translate!), but I cannot find anything on the website to indicate if the menu is now labelled gluten free. I don’t believe there is gluten free soy sauce and of course steer clear of battered items.

The first time I visited Paris as a coeliac was part of a driving trip around France. As we were going to be in some remote areas, I bought a book produced in the USA, Gluten Free France, which also has a comprehensive Paris listing. It is not cheap, but if you don’t have time to do the research yourself online, it is a very handy resource. For some more information about the 2011 edition, click here.
