NORWALK, Calif. – Behind two major decisions, one technical-fall, and a fall, the Mountaineers were able to defend their Southern Regional Dual Championship that they acquired in 2014. Mt. San Antonio College began the day by defeating an All-Star team made up of backup wrestlers from various teams; the final score was Mt. San Antonio 46, the All-star team 6. Their semifinal match was a bit tougher for the Mountaineers, but still managed to defeat a tough Cuesta College squad 37-15 to advance to the finals.

The dual-meet started at 125-pounds where the # 2 ranked wrestler Jake Schaeffer (Otay Ranch High), upset the # 1 ranked wrestler in the state Giovanni Castillo (Centennial/Corona) 7-6 to put Palomar College first on the scoreboard. Chris Kimball (San Marcos High) followed up with a 7-4 win over Adrian Cisneros (Etiwanda High) to give Palomar College a 6-0 advantage over Mt. San Antonio. However, Mt. San Antonio’s rock-solid middleweights of George Taylor (Carter High), Mario Lopez (Rowland High) and Terrill Sidner (Beaumont High), beat their respective opponents to help the Mountaineers take a 13-6 lead after five weight classes.

Erick Collin’s (San Marcos High) tried to take back the momentum for Palomar College as he defeated Reed South (Rim of the World High) 9-3, but Hector Vargas (Bloomington High) stopped the comeback when he pinned Alex Gallo (Escondido High) in the first period to help Mt. San Antonio College take a 19-9 lead with three matches left on the dual. Alex Grave (San Marcos High) and Seville Hayes (Mar Vista High) defeated their opponents, but it wasn’t enough as Palomar College lost 22-15 to finish as the Southern Regional Duals runner-ups.
