Today we are honored to introduce you to Shem from Mr. B’s Luminaries.

Please introduce yourself to our readers and explain a little bit about your business.

My name is Shem Gott. I am the owner of Mr. B’s Luminaries, a small candle shop in Del Mar. The distinguishing feature of my candles is the quality ingredients I use in my recipe. Made with 100% soy wax and scented with pure, undiluted essential oils, my luminaries burn longer and cleaner, while smelling fresher. On top of all of that, I offer refills in my shop at a discount to eliminate waste.

We believe that one of the ways to achieve happiness is to “Do what you love, love what you do.” How does this philosophy apply to your life?

I’ve never found this to be true. I absolutely love what I do and still my job, creative as it is, is not the thing that brings me happiness, in an ultimate sense. I have met people who love what they do vocationally and yet they are still miserable. Even when everything around me is going right, I can still be plagued by discontentment. I have found that the only cure to this is a thankful heart, in good times or bad, when my job is great or when it is lousy. I am thankful to the Creator for my job, but if I lose it tomorrow and have to go back to the uninspiring grind again, then I hope I would still be content. I hope that answer wasn’t too philosophical… haha. Maybe I should have just said, “Ya, I love my job!”

Our mission here at The Bright Side Project is to spread sunshine on a daily basis because we firmly believe that life is (still) beautiful. Where do you find beauty and inspiration?

Oh my goodness! Everywhere! When I slow down and take the time to notice it, I see beauty and inspiration in nature, my kids, my wife, music… I swear, there have been so many times that I have been driving, or working at the candle shop, a song comes on and I am brought to tears. Beautiful and inspiring, indeed!

On a dreary day, what do you do to infuse your life with a little bit of sunshine?

Cup o’ Tea! And maybe a good history book. I love history…

What are you most grateful for?

A new life! Jesus gave me a new life when I was 17 years old. Since then I have NEVER been the same.
