Dia Mirza wedding still generates a lot of interest, even though the marriage took place on October 18th, 2014. And the reason for that, let’s face it, is simple. Dia Mirza, is a veritable beauty queen, who has in addition, in her possession the altogether desirable traits of business acumen, acting skills and a penchant for social work. It is no wonder then that the Dia Mirza and Sahil Sangha wedding continues to retain so much interest, but first let’s preface the story of their wedding with some context.

Dia Mirza Wedding Carnival – The Beginning

Dia Mirza was born Dia Handrich to Deepa and Frank Handrich in the city of Hyderabad. Her father who separated from her mother when Dia was just four years old, was a German graphic and industrial designer and artist, and her mother a Bengali Hindu who worked as an interior designer and landscaper. Dia’s mother went on to marry Ahmed Mirza, which is where Dia gets her last name from.

Dia began her road to fame and stardom when she burst upon the scene in 2000, winning both the Femina Miss India and Miss Asia Pacific titles. She followed this success up with her Bollywood debut with 2001’s Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Me, which unfortunately couldn’t do as well at the box office as she had hoped. However, she had made an instant impact in the hearts of her fans, who would from that time onwards support and follow one of Bollywood’s most beautiful actresses.

Various subsequent movie appearances like 2001’s Deewanapan, 2003’s Dum and various others – Tumko Na Bhool Payenge, Tumsa Nahin Dekha, Parineeta, Dus, Lage Raho Munnabhai among others which won her the legions of fans remain with her even today, even though she has taken extended breaks from her acting and forayed into different ventures.

Sahil Sangha on the other hand comes from Sikh origins, and is well versed in marketing and advertising, with a degree from New York University. He worked at Random House, one of the biggest publishers in the world. Upon his return to India, Sahil worked with Sunil Manchanda of MAD films fame, and was the assistant director for 2007’s John Abraham starrer, Salaam-e-Ishq.

Dia Mirza Wedding – A Budding Romance

Sahil and Dia Mirza had been dating for a long time before their marriage, in fact they started dating all the way back in 2009. Their first meeting was officially related to a business discussion, and was arranged by Vikram Phadnis, who Sahil had worked with on Salaam-e-Ishq. It is reported that Sahil went to see Dia about a script that he wanted her to consider. It was a classic case of love at first sight, and even though the future husband and wife to be did not know what was to follow in their lives. Sahil and Dia together own a film production company called Born Free Entertainment, which much to the chagrin of Dia’s legions of fans, meant that she would be foraying into film production and take longer breaks from acting.

Sahil Sangha really loves Dia it really shows when he is talking about their relationship. This is what he said when asked “what is the best thing about his wife?”

“To explain what I love the most about her is very simple, she is pure. She is very giving and and gives it with all heart. She lights up a room as soon as she walks in, she is such a beautiful soul. I’m blessed to have an understanding partner like her”

Talking about her marriage and the beautiful relationship she shares with Sahil, Dia says

“I am very happy. Ours was a simple Arya Samaj wedding ceremony. The vows were clearly explained to us. It was wonderful because it was good to be conscious of what you are going through, and what are the vows that you are exchanging. It was a dream wedding, in the best possible way”

They subsequently went on to be spotted together at various parties, functions, red carpets and other events. For long rumors circulated about the couple being a pair, of which no official word was uttered, but at the October 2011 launch of their movie Love Breakups Zindagi which was directed by Sahil himself and released under the Born Free banner, Dia Mirza officially confirmed that they were a pair. And they haven’t looked back since.

Dia Mirza Pre-Wedding Ceremonies

The Sahil Sangha – Dia Mirza wedding took place not long after the couple’s engagement in New York in April 2014, and it was a special engagement with Sahil going down on one knee to propose in the middle of the spectacular Brooklyn Bridge.

Dia had chosen to wear Ritu Kumar for her mehndi ceremony – a chanderi anarkali in deep marigold yellow, which Ritu Kumar said was styled in the likeness of the kurta’s worn in the courts of Agra in the 15th century. A matching fuchsia dupatta featuring gota patti and delicate motifs completed her look, while Sahil sported a beautiful maroon kurta.

The sangeet ceremony was another memorable affair, and it involved Dia performing on the songs Aao Huzoor and Bole Chudiyan for the lucky Sahil. The entire venue was done up with beautiful rajnigandha flowers, and the bride to be looked simply exquisite in purple lehenga from the studios of Anita Dongre, and she rounded off her look by decking herself up in kundan jewellery. Sahil matched her all the way looking classy as ever in a black bandhgala coat – making for one very happy looking couple.

After much delay and confusion caused by their joint work commitments of their production firm, the wedding finally took place on October 18, in New Delhi’s chattarpur farm. Dia Mirza looked every bit the beauty queen in a beige and green sharara designed by none other than superstar couturier Ritu Kumar, while Sahil opted for a Raghavendra Rathore creation – an achkan in a gorgeous off white color in silk linen.

Dia clarified that since she wasn’t getting married in Hyderabad, she wanted to add a bit of Hyderabadi flavor to the wedding, and she specifically chose her particular outfit because it made her feel like a Hyderabadi bride. Dia complemented the sharara with a golden jacket that just about completed her look as the resplendent bride.

The chattarpur farmhouse was beautifully decorated, with the beautifully arranged – with lilies and orchids being the highlights of the décor. Sahil made a grand entrance looking like the prince charming Dia deserved by descending from a horse drawn carriage, much to the delight of the baaratis who spent a good hour dancing and making merry at the entrance. The food was varied and lavish, with a distinct Hyderabadi bias, but for the sweets however, Bengali mithai was the course for the day.

As expected the Dia Mirza wedding was a star studded affair with Lara Dutta, Sushmita Sen, Sophie Choudhury, Zayed Khan, Cyrus Sahukar and Aditi Rao Hydari all in attendance, amongst others. The rites of the marriage themselves were conducted in the fashion of Arya Samaj, of which Dia has been a lifelong follower and admirer.

The Reception And Beyond

Post wedding festivities were in order, and for this special occasion Dia looked absolutely stunning as she positively glowed in a peach and gold Shantanu and Nikhil lehenga. The diamond and emerald jewellery was the icing on the cake, and given that venue was decked out in beautiful décor of matching colors, this is our favorite look of Dia’s with respect to the entire wedding. Shantanu and Nikhil even tweeted as to how impressed they were with Dia’s look in their creation.

The couple’s plans for a romantic honeymoon were put on the back burner as they took time out to celebrate Diwali with family, and true to tradition, Dia looked absolutely stunning in a white Sabyasachi creation. The couple decided to take their honeymoon in January of 2015, a new beginning of sorts.

Other than that, the couple recently celebrated one year as husband and wife, and they couldn’t be happier. They both remain dedicated professionals with, as usual, work taking up most of their time.

We wish the beautiful all the best for the future.
