Hughes admits some stars may want to leave

Mark Hughes admits he cannot keep all his big-name Stoke players happy.

Hughes says some of his senior players have complained to him about their lack of game time and the likes of Peter Crouch, Mame Biram Diouf and Charlie Adam have spent most of the season on the sidelines.

The Stoke boss understands their frustrations, but says it is hard to make too many changes when the team are doing well and challenging on

three fronts.

“There’s a little bit of frustration because we have senior players who aren’t playing as regular as their talent deserves,” said Hughes.

“We can’t address that for them at the moment because of the games we have.

“They have made me aware of their frustrations and I want that.

“It isn’t ideal for them, but it’s difficult for them to break into the side at the moment as a consequence of the form we are showing.”

Newcastle confident of signing Townsend

Steve McClaren is closing in on a move for Tottenham outcast Andros Townsend.

Newcastle boss McClaren is pushing hard for a £10m deal and is increasingly confident of getting the deal done in January.

It is understood fresh talks have taken place and Newcastle are hopeful of agreeing a deal.

England winger Townsend, 24, is keen on the switch but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is holding out for a bigger price.

Townsend knows he has no future at White Hart Lane after falling out of favour with Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino after a bust-up with a fitness coach.

Townsend wants to make the switch to push his claims in Roy Hodgson’s England squad for next summer’s Euros.

Newcastle have given McClaren big money to spend in January and they are also set to bid for West Brom’s Saido Berahino.

But the Berahino deal is far more complicated as the ex-England under-21 striker would prefer a move to London and Tottenham.

West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace is also playing hardball and threatening not to sell in this window even though Berahino has just 18 months left on his contract.

Newcastle are desperate to sign a striker to feed off Townsend’s service but, despite being ready to test West Brom’s resolve, they know the Berahino deal could become a long running saga.

Pellegrini delivers warning to Toure

Yaya Toure has been told to put thoughts of a summer move to the back of his mind and concentrate of leading Manchester City’s title charge.

Boss Manuel Pellegrini addressed the latest uncertainty over Toure, insisting his priority should be helping City in their pursuit on all fronts.

The Chilean said: “I think that for Yaya and for every player the most important thing is to think in the present, in this moment, the next game.

“At the end of season you never know what will happen with anyone.

“It is very important not to think what is your future. It is important to demonstrate why you are here in Manchester City and the most important thing is to try to win the title this season.

“After that the future can be in different ways.”

Sergio Aguero has revealed he is working hard to tempt pal Lionel Messi to join him at Manchester City.

The City favourite says he has discussed his adopted hometown with the Barcelona forward and Ballon d’Or winner.

“He already knows there’s no beach! said Aguero.

“We play every three days so we just eat, rest between games – so the weather is not really that important.

“So I told him that Manchester is ideal as a city because you stay at home all day, you play every three days, we can eat, we can meet up, drink Mate [a traditional South American drink] and play football together.”

Harry Redknapp on Charlie Austin

Charlie Austin completed his move back to the Premier League earlier this week – joining Southampton – and now his former QPR boss Harry Redknapp has had his say on the striker’s move to the south coast club.

Here’s what he had to say in his Evening Standard column:

“Charlie Austin will fit in well at Southampton, and Queens Park Rangers just have to accept they took a gamble which didn’t pay off,” Redknapp wrote in The London Evening Standard.

“QPR supposedly turned down about £13million from Leicester for him last summer on the basis he could score the goals to get them straight back into the Premier League.

“He has scored 10 in 12 starts this season — which is a pretty good return — but they are 15th in the Championship and his contract is up at the end of the season.

“In that respect, £4m is not a bad deal from them but it’s a better one for Southampton. Their style of play will suit Charlie, they create a lot of chances and I can see him having a positive impact there.”

Klopp on transfers

Jurgen Klopp has refused to discuss Liverpool’s bid for Alex Texeira – but claims the Reds will not make panic buys.

Liverpool have offered £24.5million to Shakhtar Donetsk for Texeira and the Ukraine side are understood to want £38million for the Brazilian attacker.

But Klopp would not be drawn on Liverpool’s efforts to sign Texeira, which could smash the club record fee of £35million they paid for Andy Carroll.

“I have nothing to say about this,” said the Reds boss.

“We could talk about a lot of players in the world and I could, if we had time for this, talk about the qualities they have.”

Liverpool are struggling for goals, but Klopp claims any business they do this month will not be a knee-jerk reaction to their poor Premier League form.
