Liverpool have Southampton bid rejected

Liverpool have had an approach for Southampton striker Shane Long rebuffed by the south coast side.

Kop boss Jurgen Klopp was eyeing a shock £8million swoop for the Republic of Ireland ace to bolster his injury-hit frontline.

But Saints are determined to keep Long – who has scored eight goals this season – despite the £4m bargain buy of fellow frontman Charlie Austin from QPR over the weekend.

Southampton have been a favourite shopping destination for the Anfield club in recent seasons, with Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne and Rickie Lambert all moving from St Mary’s to Anfield – as did Steven Caulker, who halted a season’s loan to Ronald Koeman’s men from QPR to join the Reds.

The Hampshire side could however cash in on top-scorer Graziano Pelle – wanted by Italian giants Juventus.

That means that they can actively pursue bringing a star name back to the league – with help from the league itself – without being usurped by a rival.

Howard is their pick, according to MLS.com.

Norwich set to wrap up £8million Klose deal

Premier League Norwich are set to strengthen their defence with the signing of Wolfsburg defender Timm Klose.

“We have largely reached an agreement with Norwich, and so has Timm as far as I know,”conceded Wolfsburg general manager Klaus Allofs on Sunday.

Wolfsburg paid £4.2million to take Klose from Nurnberg in 2013, but he has made only eight Bundesliga appearances this season, with summer signing Dante preferred.

Martinez ready to spend

Roberto Martinez is ready to move into the transfer market – after finally getting Steven Naismith out of the door.

Scotland international Naismith has done a U-turn and agreed to join Norwich in an £8million deal with a medical scheduled for Monday.

Naismith backed out last week to see if other clubs would come in but the Bluesmade it clear they wanted him to go to help raise funds.

But the deal is back on after Norwich persuaded him to move to Carrow Road with the promise of regular games which he was not getting at Everton.

Toffees boss Martinez is desperate to strengthen his squad in January and is ready to shake up his squad with the Naismith funds.

They have already moved for Leeds’ £5m-rated Sam Byram and have also made enquiries about Derby’s England under-21 midfielder Will Hughes.

Their bigger target is Dynamo Kiev’s winger Andriy Yarmolenko as Martinez has refused to deny an interest in the Ukraine forward.

Yarmolenko, 26, is a long standing target for Martinez who wants to get him now rather than risk waiting until the summer when more clubs might move in.

Real director general Jose Angel Sanchez says disciplinary proceedings are already under way with a number of British clubs for similar offences.

Speaking to the El Larguero programme on Cadena Ser, Sanchez said:

“I have relations with British clubs and I know for a fact that in many of these cases the disciplinary investigations have already started a while ago.

Sunderland were linked with a £14million move on Friday, but Swansea were quick to dispel suggestions that they would part with the Ghanaian international this month.

The £120,000-a-week midfielder enjoyed an excellent start to the season at the Liberty Stadium, but he’s been unable to turn around the Swans fortunes as they’ve struggled this term.

Ayew has scored seven times in his debut season however, and already has eyes on a move up the table.

Mathieu Debuchy has accused Arsene Wenger of misleading him about his Arsenal future.

The France full-back is set to leave this January with Aston Villa and Bayer Leverkusen among the interested clubs.

The £12m signing from Newcastle has made only two Premier League appearances this season – the last on November 8.

Asked by L’Equipe if he regretted not leaving last summer, Debuchy said: “Yes, clearly I have lost six months. I would have preferred to have left last summer but the coach told me I would have my chance. It was not the case.

“I don’t know who is responsible. Last year, I was injured (shoulder) and I was out a long time and Bellerin played well. This summer, I had a good pre-season and I was ready to begin the season as a starter but the coach decided otherwise. That is competition, no problem. That is football.”

France’s first-choice right-back at the last World Cup, Debuchy now wants to move to get back into contention for his home Euro 2016.

Aston Villa coach Remi Garde has already spoken to him about moving to the Premier League’s bottom club.

“They are among the teams who want me,” Debuchy said. “I am looking at everything but it is not an option I have ruled out. It could be a great challenge (at Villa).

“Even if they are currently in trouble, Aston Villa are one of the big English clubs. I also had the coach on the phone. The conversation went well. Whatever happens, even if it is to come back here in the summer and leave again, I have to leave this winter. I cannot stay at Arsenal.”
