KOTA KINABALU: A 16-year-old student, Arfvendrew@Otoi, won the Kota Marudu Beatbox Battle held at the Hexan Hotel here last weekend.
He fought off 14 other very determined finalists to bring home the winner’s trophy of RM300 cash and a certificate. With his crisp clear and powerful breathing control plus his very entertaining dance moves which delighted the packed audience and judges, his victory was a foregone conclusion.
In second place was 14-year-old Maxleander, who despite his small stature, fought to the end and was never intimidated by the bigger size Otoi who towered over him menacingly during the final battle round. It was indeed an epic ‘David versus Goliath Battle’, but in the end Maxleander gallantly accepted defeat.
The third place went to Mohd Izzudin, also a 14-year-old student who went all out to prove his mettle and was loudly cheered by his very vocal supporters who came all the way from Pitas to give him moral support.
In fourth place was Muhamadun Mahdani , a 15-year-old student who narrowly missed the top three spots by just a whisker of a vote. In fifth place coming all the way from Kiulu was pretty boy Ivon Anderson. He was unplaced when he took part in last week’s Kota Kinabalu Selection held at the Oceanus Waterfront Mall.
“Now in its sixth destination, the beatbox mania continues its fervour unabated, especially among the young enthusiastic generation,” said organizer Peter Dicky Lee.
“I have received hundreds of calls from all over Sabah requesting me to organize this battle in their towns,” said Peter.
Next on the agenda is Tambunan, also a hotbed for beatbox craze, to be held on November 8 at Titanic Cafe from 1pm onwards. After Tambunan The Beatbox Battle Series continues its journey to Tenom and then the east coast towns of Sandakan, Tawau and Lahad Datu before the grand finale in Kota Kinabalu mid-December.
