KUCHING: Eleven-year-old Angel Hii stole the show when she bagged her first major title of the year and lifted the Puan Sri Dato Jamilah Anu Challenge Trophy at Kelab Golf Sarawak (KGS) yesterday.

The Year 7 student at Tunku Putra International School registered a three-day total gross score of 253 to lead a KGS clean sweep of the top three spots in the women’s gross event of the 2nd Sarawak Grand Championship.

“I am very proud of this achievement and it will motivate me further,” said Angel who never won a major title before after taking up golf at the tender age of five.

In the men’s gross contest, defending champion Lee Ka Tung completed another start-to-finish performance to card a three-day score of 229 to successfully retain the title.

Despite facing stiff challenges from others including two of his own brothers in the three-day event, the 44-year-old from Sibu Golf Club (SGC) retained the coveted Tan Sri Datuk Patinggi Adenan Satem Challenge Trophy.

“I was forced to work hard today…the other contenders played well and they were very close on my heels,” said Ka Tung who became the first golfer to win the championship back-to-back since it was introduced last year and sanctioned by Sarawak Golf Association (SGA).

His younger brother Kah Ching of Kelab Golf Miri (KGM) finished second with three strokes adrift while Abdul Rahim Abang Abd Rahman was in third place with 233 strokes.

Another younger brother Kah Ming of KGS finished fourth with 234 strokes on count back (OCB) while state junior golfers, Steven Hii and Aziel Teo finished fifth and sixth placings respectively.

Ka Tung won his fourth golf title of the year after winning the recent 8th Sarawak Masters Golf Championship held on August 23; the recent 16th Sibu Amateur Open Golf Championship and this year’s Sarawak Classic Golf Championship.

The winners received their prizes from Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Patinggi Adenan Satem and his wife, Puan Sri Dato Jamilah Anu who were accompanied by Sarawak Golf Association (SGA) president Hoan Kee Hock.
