KUCHING: A pioneering member of Azam Young Souls Asyraf Hardy was elected as Azam Youth Central (AYC) chairman for the 2014/2015 term during an election exercise held last Sunday at their centre at Medan Pelita here.

The 28-year-old university student is a well-known local musician and rapper. He takes over the position of AYC chairman from engineering graduate Adruce Azman.

Meanwhile, skateboarding enthusiast and entrepreneur Roy Augustine was elected deputy chairman while college student Mohd Nazrie Salasian from Sabah was elected secretary. Roy is one of the pioneering Azam Young Souls who joined the Young Souls & the City programme since its inception in 2012,
while Nazrie is part of the newer batch of the youth volunteers who joined the programme early this year.

Seven other Young Souls were elected namely college student and talented singer Sasha Ningkan, photography student Mohd Fuad, university student and talented visual artist and musician Mohd Amir Lufti, painter/visual artist Hamizah Amin, dancer and choreographer Mohd Wasli, university graduate and videographer Mohd Dzulfiqkhar and Hazwan Salleh from Jabatan Belia dan Sukan.

In his acceptance speech, Asyraf congratulated all the elected committee members and hoped that all the Azam youth volunteers will give their full support to AYC’s future activities. He also called on the members to continue to promote volunteerism among other local youths regardless of their backgrounds.

The AYC exco members are guided by Azam’s youth development committee and the secretariat. Apart from providing leadership and motivation to other members, the AYC exco committee is responsible for assisting in the conceptualisation and implementation of AYC’s activities. These include reaching out to other youths in the state to be involved in positive social for them and community development activities.

Honorary secretary of Azam, Ariff Irwani Azahari who was also present, reminded the newly elected members that leadership meant serving others. Ariff who was also chairman of Azam Youth Development Committee assured that the management and board of Azam would continue to support and guide them.

About 40 members of AYC attended the election which was followed by a Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri lunch. The informal exercise was also to help train youths in organisational and leadership skills.

AYC was launched at Medan Pelita on July 6 last year and had since organised various youth activities at the centre. Its members comprises youths from various social and cultural backgrounds, and have talents in diverse fields such as in creative and performing arts, sports and business.

Their range of activities includes motivational talks, leadership bootcamps, seminars, mini concerts, busking and extreme sports.

Their next activities will be a busking4community activity at Damai Central this Saturday evening, and the fourth instalment of their AYCLive@WayangStreet at Medan Pelita on Aug 30.

Youths especially those around the city are invited to take part or watch the various items to
be showcased at the AYCLive event which include a mini concert by local live bands, busking, Cosplay and display and sale of books and magazines.

Among other things, the objectives of these events are to help promote healthy activities among local youths and contribute to making the city a more vibrant and liveable city.

Azam Youth Central is open to all youths here interested in positive personal development and in contributing to society.
