MIRI: Special Olympics athletes Modikai Remy, Jethro Ling and Mohd Arif Iqwan from here conquered Mount Kinabalu in Sabah recently.

Modikai is from PDK Sunflower Centre, Ling from SMK St. Joseph, and Mohd Arif from SMK Luak. They were accompanied by their teachers Robina Lembang, Sandi Danel and Bonika Bundak to scale the famous mountain.

“Scaling South East Asia’s highest peak may not be one’s ultimate wish, but for some Special Olympics athletes, it is a chance of a lifetime,” said Sarawak Special Olympics (Miri) chairlady Liza Chai in a statement

Chai added it was the 6th time that Miri had sent participants for such a climb. The other climbers were from Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Tawau and Selangor.

“We are proud not only because of their success, but the determination of the athletes who underwent intensive training for three months at Canada Hill for the climb.”

Initiated in 1999, the Mount Kinabalu Challenge for Special Olympics aims to rid society of its ignorance and prejudice against the intellectually disabled.

It also served as an opportunity for interactions among the participants and volunteers, who come from all walks of life.
