Q: Dear 100 Hour Board,

Can we see the pets of the Board?

-Chirp

A:

Dear Chirp,

I have a pair of rats named Frank and Chuck. They are just adorable. Here's Frank, who is adorable and snuggly if a little dopey:

And here's Chuck, who has a distaste for all humans but mostly tolerates us and is brave and very smart:

Rats are great because they can learn tricks and love people, but they are clean and they live in a cage. Also, if they are sleeping and they hear their treat bag rustle they will charge the bars even though they are too sleepy to open their eyes, like this:

Dear C,

This is my adorable, sweetheart dog, whom I will hereafter call ELEVEN. She is my sunshine.

A:

Dear Chirp-

I've posted pictures of my dog before, but there are always more where those came from!

Belle is now 2.5 years, but still crazy energetic and almost always a delight. But let's skip the boring stuff and just get to the pictures:

She's not usually much for swimming, but playing with the other dogs was too much of a temptation.

Forced to wear the birthday crown before she gets her birthday steak. The background contains wreckage from the birthday toys she'd already ripped up.

Seriously, the dog is all leg.

And to close, a bonus Star Wars Snapchat message from Stargirl:

A:

Dear Nanny,

In Board Question #86524 I shared a picture of my cat 8 years ago (there is a distinct possibility that Dragon Lady took the photo), but I don't mind providing a more recent picture, too. This one was taken in January of this year.

This cat has been through a lot with me! We're basically two birds of a feather, and I'm hoping he'll stick around for at least another 8 years because I kind of wuv him.

Dear Chip,

Thank you for asking this. I was going to hijack the thread about Concorde's cat but then realized that was a jerk move so I deleted it. Immediately upon deleting my post, I found this in the unread section of the inbox! Nice.

My dog is named Clara Barkton. She is a 1/2 German Shepherd, 1/4 Australian Shepherd, 1/4 Black Lab. You would think having three of the smartest dog breeds in her lineage would make her extremely smart, but nope. She is dumb as a rock. It's like... it's like how steak is delicious and strawberries are delicious and root beer is delicious but they would be horrifying together if you mixed them up in a blender. Except the second this steak/strawberry/root beer concoction is taken off her leash she sprints right into traffic to play fetch with school buses.

Here she is as a brand new puppy, frolicking about on the Idaho, Utah border:

SGT Sentry is so proud of her.

Here she is being walked by SGT Sentry, who loves his Superman cape almost as much as he loves his dog:

They both love the Parley's Canyon dog park.

Here is Clara at the Great Salt Lake!

Getting a little bigger! She loved chasing after the brine flies, but hated the 180 million degree weather and salty water.

Her first snowstorm! Awwww, look at how much she loves the snow!

More recently, here she is up Mill Creek Canyon. So big! So good at herding my intrepid little mountain explorers further up the mountain:

This picture is from about two days ago. Hello, the Board!

Clara with her prized possession, the old tennis ball:

She may be stupid, but she is infinitely better than any old cat. Those things are worthless.

Dear Chirp,

May I introduce you to my sideways dog, Sonny? (Sorry about the sideways photo. Turn your computer or your head.)

I adopted her from the Humane Society of Utah in October. She was so shy that she didn't even want to go for a walk with me and my husband at first. On our walk together, Homestar and I were charmed by her curiosity and her sweetness. We adopted her that afternoon. Even though Sonny's still pretty shy around people she doesn't know, she warmed up to us quickly. Her favorite place to be is curled up in one of our laps.

Marzipan

A:

Dear Chirp,

Yes, absolutely. I love animals and I have a fair number of pets. Allow me to introduce you. (I apologize for the sideways photos. I appear to be having the same unexplainable issue as Marzipan. Oh well.)

This is our baby, Yuki. My husband and I adopted her shortly after we married about nine years ago. The adoption agency didn't know much about her except the pound had found her on the streets in Orem. She was full of milk at the time but they found no sign of any puppies and nobody ever claimed her. They estimated she was about a year old and she might be a Springer Spaniel/Jack Russell mix. She still struggles with some separation anxiety and she'll hide under the bed and quake if anyone raises their voice, even if it's not directed at her. She's come a long way though and we absolutely adore her. (Fun fact: she's hiked the Y a few times.)

About four years ago, we got a small flock of chickens and a couple of those old ladies are still hanging around. They don't lay eggs much anymore but I free range my chickens so it's still worth it for me to have them around as bug control and compost turners. Plus, since they're from our original flock, we named them and you just don't eat animals that have names. My girls tend to be prone to pasty butt which can lead to myiasis, or flystrike, and if you have a very strong stomach you can Google those things. Anyway, that's why in the picture above I'm giving one of my girls, a White Cochin named Flemeth, a bath in my kitchen sink here. Don't worry, I double sanitized everything.

This is our other dog, Kaya. Yuki is wonderful, but we sometimes call her "The Old Lady Dog" because she never strays too far from you, she loves to curl up on your lap and just, in general, take it easy and not do too much. My husband was itching for a more athletic dog so about 3 1/2 years ago we adopted Kaya. She's a Border Collie/Lab mix and she's as goofy as she looks. She jump-catches frisbees, leaps into rivers and would chase squirrels for hours if we let her. She also kept trying to eat my honey bees and they finally had enough last week and she got stung three or four times on her back. She was totally fine but it was kind of funny to see her go into full-blown panic mode over a few insects. She cowered in the corner for a few hours after it happened and she hasn't dared to go near the hive since then, so, lesson learned.

This is our cat, Wasabi. My cat of 18 years, Garfield, passed away last summer and he had been a stray my family had taken in when he was a few months old. Two weeks before he died, I found a cat on our property with a newborn kitten. I fed them for a week and then they disappeared. A couple of months later, the mama cat and her kitten showed up again and I still had Garfield's cat food so I started to feed them again. At this point, the mama cat started to turn on her kitten and wouldn't let him eat. She was also very skittish around us and she was nasty to our dogs so we eventually trapped her and took her to our local animal shelter. The kitten, however, warmed up to us real fast, especially my kids, and I missed having an outdoor cat (I don't do indoor cats/litter boxes) so we declared him officially ours, took him to the vet for a check-up, and named him Wasabi.

Lastly, they're not exactly pets but I have a real treat for you. Just this week I did a routine hive inspection and I managed to get a picture of the elusive queen honey bee. She's near the center of the picture and she's slightly larger and darker than the other honey bees. In the height of the summer season, she can lay up to 2,000 eggs a day and that's literally all she does her entire life is just lay eggs. Pretty neat, right?

Dear Chirp Chirp,

I've shared pictures of Komrade before, but he's a cute little demon, so I'll gladly add more.

Being held by Andy.  He's usually very squirmy, so this is a rare, clear shot of him.

Fatty being coaxed out of his hutch.

It's a poor picture, but I couldn't resist.  I just love the way his legs splay when he's held like this.

Dear Chirp ~

Already done.

Hey you,

Here's some pics of Canine Keen. And also little Cadet Keen, because I somehow missed out on every kid question and want to show her off. Also I have no idea what is up with the Board image upload thing so everyone just gets to crank their head sideways for a moment.

Okay, I have no idea why that is so huge. I'm leaving it for the editors to fix because clearly this image was not automatically resized. (Editor's Note: Some sizes have been fixed, some remain large, I have no idea how to change image rotation right now.)

The pooch also loves her some sleep. Sometimes on curling irons, apparently.

Ears for days. She's also part mountain goat because she always climbs up all the pillows and sits in the windowsill.

They both love looking out the window together. Well, Cadet loves it. Canine can be touchy.

Last pic, it's a baby. More specifically, my adorable baby. No worries, this was in a non-moving vehicle.

Dear birb,

One of the perks of living with my in-laws is that we also live with their pets.

This is Danny:

Specifically, this is Danny making sure that my mother-in-law can't work on the Darth Vader quilt she gave me for Christmas a year and a half ago.

Not that he hates Christmas. There are some parts of it that he really likes.

I love Danny. Danny pretends he doesn't care, but he really does love me too. At least when he's hungry or bored or wants to go out.

This is Petri:

Pete is a complete idiot and a doofus and I love him anyway.

I don't know what we're going to do when we go petless again in September.
