Shiny, dainty and lightweight: velvet has a long history, and this Fall Winter 2016-2017 it is center-stage on a lot of catwalks. The word “velvet” makes us think of a visually imposing, solemn textile that could potentially weigh down your outfit, if not used with care, but it doesn’t always have to be that way. Some maisons actually revisited velvet, making it sexier and easier to wear. Here are 5 unusal ways to wear it.

Turning your suit into casual.

No matter whether it’s a tuxedo or pajama-cut, try wearing your pant suit with sneakers or slip-ons, and give your outfit an instant chic touch: try it, you won’t be disappointed.

Accessorizing a coat.

Take Aunt Sadie’s old-school coat, or those coats that look like they are straight out of a tsarina’s closet, and then, head to Prada for inspiration. Why not wear your coat with a belt pack, a corset, or maybe a few belts?? The result will look trendy and cutting edge. Just make sure you don’t overdo it!

Grunge-style.

Yes to velvet slip dresses! Yes to wearing them with a band shirt underneath, and yes to flannel shirts on top.

Giving it some warmth with a cardigan.

Maxi skirt, sheath skirt, wide dress, or maybe simply a long dress. If you need ideas to turn down the in-built drama of velvet by a notch, why not try wearing it with a slightly oversized cardigan?

Investing on accessories.

If wearing velvet is really not your thing, why not give accessories a chance then? There are shoes, bags, headbands, and so much more. With velvet accessories, you can make your outfit more beautiful, definitely give it a softer edge, and more shine. Are you ready to experiment?
