"Playing dress up begins at age five and never truly ends," the renowned designer Kate Spade famously said. But what you dress your children in plays an important role too. Think pesticides, toxic zippers and buttons and toxic clothing — kidswear comes with numerous pitfalls.

Fortunately, a number of sustainable brands have found a way out, offering kidswear made from organic cotton, herbal dyes and non-toxic materials. Here are five of the most adorable and cost-effective brands for children, which score on comfort and style.

Tüla

A non-profit enterprise based out of Chennai, Tüla has made a name for itself in ethical clothing. In Sanskrit, the word tüla means cotton, and this label emphasizes on sourcing pure organic, rain-fed cotton directly from small farmers. The yarn is handspun by khadi artisans, and coloured with only natural dyes. Even the tailoring is undertaken by groups from marginalised communities.

Light and minimal, Tüla’s garments are ideal for kids. The label also offers clothing for adults, and is available in stores in Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Deeply invested in the empowerment of Indian cotton farming communities, the enterprise also calls volunteers to purchase garments, organise community events and partnerships.
