For some people, the best espresso in the world doesn’t mean a thing (espresso lovers are going to cringe at this) and all they want is a cup of black coffee (Watery? Whatever.) in the morning and a quick and cheap way to get it. There are many ways to brew coffee and one of the most inexpensive ways is to have a simple coffee maker that makes your regular cup of joe, instead of espresso.

There are many types of coffee makers. The most common and convenient coffee maker you will see in most offices or homes are drip coffee makers.

Types Of Coffee Maker

Drip Coffee Maker

French Press

Moka Pot

Vacuum Coffee Maker

Single Serve

A drip coffee maker is very easy to operate and hassle free, which is what most people like and what I recommend. All you need to do with a drip coffee maker is to put ground coffee into a filter and let the hot water drip through the filter into a carafe. There are manual and automatic drip coffee makers around in the market, but most people nowadays prefer the automatic drip coffee maker. It may not be the best appliance to brew delicious coffee since it can’t brew the coffee with a high or precise temperature but it will be the easiest way to brew coffee.

So how do you choose the best drip coffee maker?

Here are a few factors to be considered:

Carafe Type: Glass Or Thermal Carafe

First, you must consider whether you want a glass carafe or thermal carafe for your drip coffee maker. A thermal carafe is great if you need to keep the coffee warm without burning it or getting a bitter taste in it. Glass carafes are usually heated on the hot plate, if it is left too long it will get a bitter taste. Some people like the glass carafe drip coffee maker because it allows them to see how much coffee is in it.

Capacity

How many cups do you need? The capacity usually ranges from 1 cup to 12 cups.

Programmable Timer

Some coffee makers allow you to program for brewing coffee at a specific time. Some come with automatic shut-off feature too.

Type of Filter

The right coffee maker filter can make a difference to your brew. There are 2 main types or shapes of coffee filter: flat bottomed or cone filter. The flat bottom filter is more common but the cone filter is much better for extracting the coffee taste.

Other Features

Built in grinder, dual brewing, built in water filter, pause feature and etc could be things to considered. Other general considerations are ease of pouring and cleaning, availability of replacement parts, and looks.
