LOCAVORE PARTNERSHIP WITH FARMHOUSE DIRECT
The Locavore Edition is a publication that educates and informs consumers about sustainable regional food producers and suppliers. They have just announced their partnership with Farmhouse Direct, an online Farmer’s Market, an initiative developed by Australia Post. You can purchase directly from producers anywhere in Australia. The Locavore Edition will eventually work to link their hundreds of producer profiles on their website to an online shop on Farmhouse Direct.
MAL GILL 2013 AUSTRALIAN SANDWICH KING
The Australasian Sandwich Association today announced that Mal Gill, former My Kitchen Rules contestant and owner of Lady Marmalade Café and Shady Palms Café in Brisbane, has been selected as the best sandwich make in the country. Mal’s sandwich menu included a Berbere spiced shredded beef brisket wrap and a San Fran Chicken triple decker toasted sandwich.
LONELY PLANET RECOGNISED FOR COMMITMENT TO RESPONSIBLE FORESTRY
More than 98% of Lonely Planet’s paper consumption is now Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified, based on an independent assessment by SCS Global Services. Lonely Planet has been sourcing FSC-certified paper since 2008.
ANTIPODIUM FOR ASOS INC
ASOS has introduced the eagerly anticipated second footwear collection from London-based label Antipodium. The collection debuted at London Fashion Week in February, as part of Antipodium’s runway show ‘Sex, Lies & CCTV’, which explored the politics of surveillances. The three styles include leather lace up brogues, rich velvet peep-toe ankle boots and a pair of cut-out boots. The collection is available online on ASOS with prices ranging from $136 - $173.
ACCOR MANAGEMENT OF QANTAS DOMESTIC LOUNGES
Accor has announced it will take over operations for the majority of Qantas Domestic Lounges. It has managed Qantas’ First/Business Lounges in Sydney and Melbourne for over five years, now expanding to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra and Perth from November this year.
THE ELECTROSPECTIVE SPOTIFY APP
Electrospective, the multi-platform celebration of electronic music from 1958 to today, has just launched the Electrospective Spotify App. It fills the Spotify app gap for fans of synth pop, ambient, breakbeat, dance, experimental and industrial. The app’s home page offers event driven playlists and you can also listen to previous eras of electronic music. Its Playlist Generate function can be set to a preferred genre setting, select the tempo and choose from sub-genres, as well as a time span option.
CAPITOL COUTURE
Inspired by The Hunger Games, Capitol Couture was created prior to the release of the film last year. The Capital Couture summer issue Zoetic Sol is now live at http://capitolcouture.pn/. For the Catchinf Dire re-launch, the website is much more high fashion and will roll out as three main issues for Spring, Sumemr and Autumn. The website will be updated weekly in between each main seasonal issue, which will include cover stories, Capitol ‘inspired’ looks, designer and character profiles, guides and user generated content.

AFL GRAND FINAL ENTERTAINMENT
The AFL have announced that Australian band Hunters & Collectors (pictured), along with Birds of Tokyo, will headline the 2013 Toyota AFL Grand Final entertainment at the MCG on Saturday September 28. Hunters & Collectors will perform at the Virgin Australia half time show, and Birds of Tokyo will perform in the lead up to the centre bounce. They will also both perform at The Virgin Australia Premiership Party – the free post-match fan event open to the public following the Grand Final.
COOPERS ALEHOUSE AT SYDNEY AIRPORT
Coopers brewery in conjunction with Emirates Leisure Retail Australia have opened the first Coopers Alehouse in Sydney at Sydney Airport’s T2 Domestic Terminal. The fully branded Coopers bar will offer a wide selection of Coopers’ brews on tap, plsu bottled local and imported beers, wines and pre-mixed beverages. The menu will include deli sandwiches, gourmet pizzas and entrée-size bites. It will open daily from 5am to 10:30pm.
VAUCLAUSE HOUSE SEPTEMBER HIGH TEA (Sydney)
Vaucluse House has opened up its Verandah and Little Drawing Room for the month of September with an exclusive Colonial High Tea. It will give guests the opportunity to see how the house was used in its heyday. Fresh Catering, who manage the Vaucluse House Tearooms next to the Hosue serve High Tea every Sundya, but this is the first time the House itself is open for diners. Food selections include Smoked Salmon Finger Sandwiches, Victoria Sponge with Straeberries, Battenberg Cake and Chocolate and Vanilla Meringues. For $45 per person, the high tea will be served on the Verandah of Vaucluse House or in the Little Drawing Room. Sydney chef and farmer Martin Boetz will head ‘It’s All About Food’, a panel discussion on sustainable farming and sourcing local produce, as part of the ‘Down to Earth’ events in Sydney Morning Herald’s ‘Good Food Month’. Other panellists include agronomist Tally Mathews; Natural Health Consultant Sarah Luck; vegetable farmer Joyce Wilkie; Melanda Park free range pork producer Matt Simmons; and organic food distributor James Nathan. RILEY STREET GARAGE LAUNCH (Sydney)
Due to launch this October is Riley Street Garage, located at 55 Riley Street Wolloomooloo. The 200 seat restaurant is the vision of Brody Peterson of The Parlour Group, the man also responsible for The Flying Squirrel and The Stuffed Beaver in Sydney. The focus will be on modern Australian cuisines, including an Oyster and Raw bar. The venue will maintain its original 1910 industrial warehouse elements, with the site once home to a full service garage.
ANANAS BAR & BRASSERIE FIRST BIRTHDAY (Sydney)
The Ananas Bar & Brasserie has just turned one, and has received its first hat in the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide 2014. Menu items include signature house-made charcuterie of terrines, parfaits, rillettes, minute steak, roasted pork belly and moules frites to name a few.
FOOD FILMS AND ART BY THE WHARF - KING STREET WHARF GOOD FOOD MONTH (Sydney)
As part of the Sydney Morning Herald’s Good Food Month, King Street Wharf will partner with Arts Brookfield to present ‘Food Films & Art by the Wharf”. For the month of October, King Street Wharf will play host to a pop-up gallery run by well-known art space Platform 72, an outdoor cinema on the wharf and dine-in food offers from participating venues. Entry to the movies on Thursday and Friday nights will be free and limited to the first 100 people, and all films will be food themed such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Julie and Julia. All venues on the wharf have special dining offers available for lunch or dinner throughout Good Food Month.
YELLOW RESTAURANT POTT’S POINT (Sydney)
The team from two-hatted Bentley Restaurant and Bar and Monopole wine bar are opening a new restaurant in Potts Point, Yellow. Co-owners Brent Savage (head chef), Nick Hildebrandt (sommelier) and Glen Goodwin (manager & sommelier) will open the restaurant mid September in the Yellow House site. The restaurant is inspired by the Parisian neo-bistro movement, with a small, frequently changing set menu featuring ingredients sourced that day. The Yellow House is a historic building of Potts Point, originally established as an artist’s collective in the early 1970s including artists Martin Sharp, Brett Whitely and George Gittoes.
AUSTRALIAN HIMALAYAN FOUNDATION 10TH ANNIVERSARY (Sydney)
On Friday 27th September, the Austtalian Himalayan Foundation is holding the organisation’s 10th Anniversary Gala Dinner. The dinner also marks the 60th Anniversary of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzin Norgay’s first summit of Everest and it will raise funds for the delivery of health, education and environmental services for people of the Himalaya. This year’s guest speaker will be Peter Garrett and other highlights include award-winning singer-songwriter Tim Freedman of The Whitlams, the opportunity to meet Everest summiteers and a aspecial performance by Tibetan musician Tenzin Choegyal. MONOPOLE AWARDED (Sydney)
Monople, the newly hated Potts Point bar and eatery has introduced a weeked prix-fixe lunch menu. Chef Brent Savage’s modern shareable menu changes each weekend to keep the lunched a little more exciting, and costs only $38 for two dishes. There will also be the award winning wine list available, and between 5pm and 6:30pm on weekdays, carafes of white or red wine are %18 and cocktails are $12.
PARRAMASALA 2013 PROGRAM ANNOUNCED (Sydney)
Parramasala Festival today announced a four-day program featuring a multicultural Opening Parade, a range of contemporary music, comedy, acrobatic performances, market stalls and outdoor entertainment. Now in its fourth year, the festival will take over the city of Parramatta from 4 – 7 October. It features well-known international and Australian artists, all inspired by the cultural influences and artistic traditions of Asia.
AWARDS AT AUSTRALIAN GARDEN SHOW SYDNEY
The Best in Show award was presented to Brendan Moar for his garden Suspended at the inaugural Australian Garden Show Sydney Opening Nigh Awards at Centennial Park. Brendan designed his garden in conjunction with the NGINA (Nursery & Garden Industry of NSW&ACT), focused on the idea of being up close, surrounded by and immersed in plants.
