Griffin Theatre Announces Programme For Festival of New Writing

Love reading and writing? Love new ideas? Addicted to watching TED Talks videos on Youtube? Come along to Griffin Theatre Company’s week-look New Writing Festival from June 12-19 and celebrate Australian ideas, words, poetry and thoughts. The festival promises for a smorgasbord of creativity and innovation, including site-specific installations, play readings, awards and performances.

On Wednesday the 12th, visit the Festival of Blue Smiting-an experimental testing ground for new works as part of the Griffinge program. The next night on Thursday the 13th , take a peak at the Uncanny Valley-a site-specific work created by some of Australia’s finest writers and directors-Angela Betzien, Tessa Leong, Ian Sinclair and Kit Brookman. Follow a journey to the museum of the human mind, as audiences are taken through the dreamy, suprising and spooky pockets of Kings Cross.

On Friday the 14th cellebrate the entrants from the sixteenth-annual Griffin Award as exerpts from the top five shortlisted plays are read aloud. Following this, the 2013 winner will be announced. On Saturday the 15th of June head on over to see a performance of the 24 Hour Play Project. Facing the ultimate constraint of time, six playwrights are paired with a NIDA directing student and are locked in one of the Griffin offices overnight. The aim is to produce six brand-new plays that will be performed 24 hours later. To wind-up the week, on Sunday the 16th, enjoy a reading from Robert Kronk’s Fly-In Fly Out-a hilarious take on the upheavals facing a community in a small-minning town.
