Karim El Ahmadi has agreed a twelve-month extension to his stay at Feyenoord. The 31-year-old midfielder signed a contract at De Kuip on Tuesday afternoon to keep him at the club until mid-2018. El Ahmadi’s previous deal was set to end in the summer of 2017.

‘We are delighted to have been able to tie down one of the mainstays of the team for even longer,’ said technical director Martin van Geel in the Boardroom at De Kuip, where the contract signing was held. ‘Last season Karim showed how you have to approach your work as a professional footballer and as such he is a role model for other players in our squad. We have a lot of confidence in Karim and we are happy that this confidence is mutual.’

It is the Morocco international’s third Feyenoord contract. El Ahmadi returned to De Kuip in the summer of 2014, where he had been under contract between 2008 and 2012. The midfielder spent the two intervening seasons at Aston Villa in the Premier League.

El Ahmadi played 32 league matches last season, spending more time on the pitch than every other Feyenoord player apart from Kenneth Vermeer.
