Dr. Travis Bradberry (@talentsmarteq) is the award-winning co-author of Emotional Intelligence 2.0 and the co-founder of TalentSmart, the world’s number one provider of emotional intelligence tests and training.

The Cheat Sheet:

You may know your IQ (intelligence quotient), but do you know your EQ (emotional quotient)?

Unlike IQ, which tends to stay the same throughout life, emotional intelligence is a flexible set of skills that can be acquired and improved with practice.

Emotional intelligence is determined by self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management.

You may test with a lower EQ score than you’d like — just ask Jordan and Jason. This only means you’ve got an easier map directing you toward what you should improve first.

Why might you be calmly efficacious in life-or-death situations but freak out when faced with The Guacamole Problem?

And so much more…

More About This Show

Emotional intelligence is a term coined in the ’60s by psychologists Reuven Bar-On and Michael Beldoch and popularized in the ’90s in a book by science journalist Daniel Goleman. In its original context, emotional intelligence can be defined as the ability to observe and translate one’s own emotions as well as the emotions of others to best guide thinking and decision making.

In an article at Forbes, Emotional Intelligence 2.0 co-author Dr. Travis Bradberry explains his updated version of emotional intelligence as:

“…the ‘something’ in each of us that is a bit intangible. It affects how we manage behavior, navigate social complexities, and make personal decisions that achieve positive results. Emotional intelligence is made up of four core skills that pair up under two primary competencies: personal competence [self-awareness and self-management] and social competence [social awareness and relationship management].”

Emotional intelligence is quantified similarly to intellect: testing results in a number — the higher, the better. But unlike IQ (intelligence quotient), which tends to remain static throughout a lifetime, an EQ (emotional quotient) can be quite malleable. That is, a low EQ shouldn’t be seen as a condemnation to suffering with subpar emotional intelligence for the remainder of your days — which comes as quite a relief to Jordan and Jason as you’ll discover here.

Listen to this episode of The Art of Charm in its entirety to better understand what goes into evaluating the four core skills of emotional intelligence, how a below-average EQ can be brought up, what arguably makes EQ more important than IQ, why lowering stress and cultivating good sleep patterns and cutting back on caffeine can make a dramatic difference in your emotional intelligence (for the better), and lots more.
