If there’s one thing that the Spanish island of Majorca does well it’s hotels, largely thanks to the fact that its many accommodation providers have had so much practice at catering for visitors. With a huge selection of resorts to choose from all around the coastline, the isle offers holidays to suit just about every type of traveller, and the lodging options that have developed in Majorca in recent decades reflect this.

So, whether you’re looking for a relaxing break on a pristine beach, a cheap and cheerful hotel that’s well placed for exploring Roman ruins, or family-friendly accommodation with plenty of entertainment for the kids, you’ll find everything you need on a budget-frinely holiday in Majorca. In this guide we’ll take you through some of the best locations and hotels on the island.

Palma de Majorca

Palma de Majorca is the island’s capital city and is a great place to experience some Balearic culture and history. Many of the local sites date back to the days of the Roman Empire, although subsequent conquests by the Moors and finally the Christians have helped to build up several layers of ancestry and heritage.

The Arab baths, for example, were constructed in the 10th century and provide a fascinating insight into what life was like under Moorish rule, while the La Seu cathedral – which took some 300 years to build – has become a symbol of modern Palma and contains the world’s largest stained glass windows.

Shopaholics will also find plenty to keep them occupied in the city, with several street markets taking place on different days throughout the week. Perhaps the most interesting of these is the Mercat Artesanal, which is open from Mondays to Saturdays during the summer and can be found in the Placa Major.

In terms of accommodation, the options are virtually limitless. The two-star Hotel Abelux, for example, is great for those who want to stay in the thick of the action, and is located just a few minutes from the Placa Espana in the city centre. Travellers looking for something a little more up-market will also find the four-star Almudaina very reasonably priced and will surely not fail to have their breath taken away by the stunning panoramic views it offers of the port.

The one thing that Palma de Majorca lacks is its own beach, although the seaside resort of Cala Major is located just a few kilometres away, which brings us nicely onto our next location…

Cala Major

One of the best things about Cala Major is that it offers tourists the chance to relax on the beach while also being just a stone’s throw from Palma de Majorca, thereby allowing them to get the best of both worlds from their holiday. The Marivent Palace – which is where the Spanish monarchy take their summer breaks – is located here too, so you can be sure the resort has everything you need to make you feel like a king (or queen).

Close to the palace itself, the Hotel LB Marivent is an excellent place for a family beach holiday, and has a fantastic pool, games room and even its own mini-golf course. It’s also just 150 m from the main parade of bars and shops, and is well placed for those who want to visit the Fundacio Pilar i Joan Miro, which features thousands of works of art by the likes of Joan Miro and Pablo Picasso.

Cala Millor

Over on the eastern side of the island, Cala Millor offers a stunning 6 km beach lapped by calm, clear waters, and is also very well located for those who want to explore the many local coves or nearby towns such as Cala Bona or S’Illot. The establishment of the Punta n’Amer nature reserve has resulted in the preservation of some 200 hectares of coastline, so the scenery around here is much more unspoiled than in other parts of the island.

That’s not to say there aren’t plenty of great hotels to choose from, with the four-star Hotel Playa del Moro offering a range of activities such as horse riding, as well as boasting its own spa, while several world-class golf courses can also be found just a few kilometres away.
