2015-06-16

2014/15 has certainly been a season to remember for former Chelsea outcast and Belgian international, Kevin de Bruyne.

In recording over 20 league assists and scoring 10 league goals this season in the Bundesliga, the current Volkswagen Arena favourite has clearly done his reputation in the Europe the world of good since he made the initial switch from Stamford Bridge.

Football fans who are perhaps unaware of the 23-year-old’s talents need only look to his performance against Bayern Munich this campaign, in which the young Belgian stared in a famous 4-1 victory for Wolfsburg against the eventual Bundesliga winners.

The creative midfield man has subsequently received a great deal of interest this season, from several strong European teams looking to acquire his highly valued services in the run up to the 2015/16 campaign. Manuel Pellegrini and his current Manchester City outfit are reportedly the keenest side of the bunch to land the Wolfsburg no. 14 and swiftly bring him back to the Premier League next term.

However, even though the Etihad would certainly provide the player with some pretty high profile surroundings throughout the course of next season, there are several important reasons for why Kevin de Bruyne must ultimately steer well clear of the Manchester City interest this summer…

The desire to sign an up and coming talent, like the one in question from a team such as City, really doesn’t arrive as much of a surprise in the cold light of day. Pellegrini’s squad likely needs a dramatic overhaul with the new season approaching, for many of his current stars have seen their performances become somewhat stagnant as the careers at the Etihad have slowly played out.

De Bruyne therefore represents a refreshing new path for the Citizens to follow on their quest to one day match their domestic achievements in Europe. The Belgian international certainly knows how to link up with his teammates in the final third, he can often get the ball in tight situations and spin the play round to a counter-attack for his side, and it also largely goes without saying how well Kevin de Bruyne can strike the ball into the back of the net.

The 23-year-old is so creative in the opposition’s half, he could well be seen as more of an artist than a mere football player. Alongside the likes of David Silva and Sergio Aguero for Man City next season, the young Belgian could potentially turn Manuel Pellegrini’s somewhat disappointing side into a much more formidable outfit.

The prospect of playing at a club such as City should raise strong warning signs for the player himself however. Like it or not, the former Premier League winners simply don’t offer most of their respective players the chance to shine on a regular enough basis. For certain stars fleeting in and out of the starting XI at the Eithad, playing for Manchester City has only disrupted their potentially exciting careers and sent them spiralling downward in a wave of inconsistency and poor form.

Very few Man City players ultimately fulfil their potential at the club, for the finances on offer often make the prospect of signing the latest big name far more tempting than notions such as growth and development. Pellegrini can buy whoever he wants in any given transfer window – so a guaranteed future at his club invariably doesn’t come easily.

As Kevin de Bruyne has also experienced a similar scenario at Stamford Bridge before, the rapidly emerging Wolfsburg favourite should know that moving to Manchester City would be a huge risk. He doesn’t want to see his talents being wasted away on the bench again – like they sadly were at Chelsea – so it seems clear that the current Bundesliga star may as well continue to do his thing with Die Wolfe over any other side.

They are the team that stuck their neck on the line to rescue him from his previous stint in the Premier League after all, and as Wolfsburg certainly seem like a team on the up within the ever competitive realms of German football, they can ultimately offer Kevin de Bruyne a much better future than anyone at Manchester City could ever present.
