Italian female fronted doom/death dealers Into Darkness have been creating quite a stir in the darkest depths of the underground scene in the past year or so, initially pricking up many peoples ears with the 2012 demo which features 4 songs of heavy, murky dark doom/death which definitely has it’s roots firmly planted in the early 90′s scene and the band take obvious influences from bands such as Asphyx, Derketa and Incantation. The band have wasted no time in capitalising on the buzz surrounding the debut demo by unleashing a new demo recently via Unholy Domain Records which sees the band taking more of a full on death metal approach. The band are on the bill for this years annual Killtown Deathfest which will take place in Copenhagen very soon I thought it would be a good time to speak with guitarist/vocalist Doomed Warrior and here is what she had to say in response to some of my questions.
Hails! Please give me a quick history of the band and tell me who does what currently for those unfamiliar with Into Darkness. I understand you went through a line up change recently, what happened there?
Into Darkness was born in September 2011, co-founded by me. With the first line-up (September 2011 – November 2012) Into Darkness recorded the first self-titled demo, in July/August 2012. Then with a second line-up (December 2012 – April 2013) we played some shows (with Pentacle, Mefitic, Necro, Cruciamentum, Saturnine, etc. between the others), without recording anything. It was with the third and current line-up that Into Darkness entered the studios for the second time, recording four new tracks to be released on three different EPs between late 2013 and early 2014. Into Darkness horde is now Ken Hunakau (bass and backing vocals, also member of Fuoco Fatuo), Pide Guts (drums, also member of Necro) and me (guitars, vocals).
You released a great demo in 2012 which was met with a great response it seems. This demo was released via Unholy Domain Records, how did you initially hook up with them? How many copies were released and is it still available? If so in which formats?
Pech is a friend since a few years, so when I told him I started a death/doom metal band, he wanted to listen to the samples, because he’s a diehard death metal maniac with a soft spot for female death growls (in fact Profanal and Putrefied Beauty released stuff through Unholy Domain). The tape was released in 100 copies, and is no more available. Unholy Domain was and is still a precious way for us to spread our music. I think every new death/doom or death metal band should send him a promo. Anyway, the demo was released also on LP (Iron Bonehead Prod.) and on CD (Hellthrasher Prod.). The first one is sold out from the label, but I’m sure there are still distros carrying it. The second one is available from the label, some distros, or directly from us through our Bandcamp page where you can download the full demo for 2 euros, or buy the CD for 5 euros + shipping costs. Otherwise, you can simply write to doomedwarrior@hotmail.it.
How has the overall response to the demo been in your opinion as well as the reviews it has got so far? Are you still satisfied with how this demo sounds overall? Or is there any things you would rather change these days when listening to it/looking back at it? What can people expect from this demo soundwise in your words?
I think the demo had a good response – I saw only one review giving us a 6/10, and that one was the “worst” amongst all those I am aware of – but I’m not 100% satisfied about it. I’d have liked to change a good part of the entire work, but what’s done is done, and I think it’s not so bad after all.
I know you have recently recorded some new material – what will these new songs be used for? How would you compare and decribe this new material to the demo material? More of the same or is it slightly different? Please tell us about each of the new songs. Where did you record them at?
The new material is more death metal oriented than doom, especially compared to the demo, and we are pretty satisfied.
The first track, called “Transmigration of Cosmic Creatures into the Unknown”, will be released on a 7″ split with Ghoulgotha (USA, doom death metal) by Unholy Domain. This is the most “doomy” one. Lyrics are about a cosmic phenomenon called Dark Flow. I really wanted Ghoulgotha to split with us, because I’m a great fan of Decrepitaph – another band of Wayne (guitars in Ghoulgotha) – and I totally dig the gloomy sound of these bands, heavily Asphyx influenced.
“Shifted to the Red End of the Spectrum” and “Dreadful Omen of a Dark Millennium” will be released via Doomentia Recs (Czech Rep.), on a 7″ EP. These songs have both fast riffing and slower parts. “Shifted ..” is about another cosmic phenomenon called Red Shift, which gives us an explanation for the expansion of the Universe. “Dreadful ..” is about an optical effect better known as Solar Eclipse; the title refers to the ancient beliefs about the new moon and the solar eclipse, omen of death and disgrace.
“3C 273″ is the nearest quasar to the Earth and to our Solar System, and the most shining known till now. This is a really “atypical” song compared to the other ones – as Levy 9′s Death was the stranger (but the best in my opinion) on the demo. It will be out on a 7″ split with Profanal via Iron Tyrant (Italy).
A very limited tape (60 copies) will be out via Unholy Domain, containing all the new material, but unedited and with a completely different (rawer) mix.
You describe your music as being old school doom death…what bands fuel and shape the sound of Into Darkness…what bands inspired you and made you want to play this style of music in the first place? What attracts you personally to such music?
My favourite band is Asphyx/Soulburn. Eric Daniels is by far my greatest influence when it comes to guitar riffing and songwriting, even if I’m inspired also by many other bands: Incantation, Autopsy, Bolt Thrower, Thorr’s Hammer, Nihilist, etc.
Death Metal is the most important part of my life. I can’t explain what attracts me so strongly to this kind of music. I simply belong to it, I’m addicted to it.
What inspires you to put a pen to paper and write lyrics? What are the general lyrical themes about?
Into Darkness lyrics are and will always be about astronomy, cosmic phenomenons and catastrophes, mysteries of the universe.
I love the band logo and name! I am guessing the band name has something to do with the band Winter… but who designed the killer looking logo?
The same guy who drawn the rough mixed tape cover. And yes, the name is taken from the Winter album. It’s a good compromise between the death metal sound that influences us and the concept behind the band.
The current Doom/Death scene seems to be stronger than ever with some great newer bands coming out playing ancient doom death, are there any other bands out there that you feel an “affinity” with or that have caught your attention who play a similar style of music?
Even if I’m more focused into old bands, there are more recent ones from the underground like Coffins, Hooded Menace, Anatomia, Decrepitaph, Grand Supreme Blood Court, Encoffination, Solothus, Ghoulgotha, and few others (not only doom-oriented) that caught my attention.
There seems to be more females fronting and playing in death metal etc bands these days…why do you think that is? I think it is great that other women are out there showing that they can growl just as brutal or play just as hard and heavy as the men!! As a female death growler who are your biggest vocal influences? Also as a guitarist who inspires you to play such riffs?!
A woman doesn’t make the music better or worse. I think people should focus on the sound of a band, without caring about gender, nationality, etc.
Female singers I respect the most are Dana Duffey (Mythic), Sharon Bascovsky (Derketa), Jill McEntee (Funerus), Runhild Gammelsæter (Thorr’s Hammer), Lori Bravo (Nuclear Death), Stéphanie Masson (November Grief), Corinne van den Brand (Acrostichon).
