Thank you to all our followers, friends and clients who have enquired how they can support Ecuador in the aftermath of the earthquake that occurred on Saturday 16 April on the northern coast of Ecuador and the subsequent aftershocks which are set to continue for several weeks.
With close to 7,000 buildings destroyed, more than 26,000 people living in shelters, and a rising death toll, there are several organisations doing valuable work in the area including the Ministry of Economic and Social Inclusion, UNICEF and the Red Cross. All of them are accepting donations to help fund their valuable work.
TerraDiversa has decided to support a group of private individuals in Cuenca with close ties to the village of San Clemente in Manabí on the coast of Ecuador who have begun to send trucks of water, food and supplies to the area.
San Clemente is a sleepy fishing village and holiday destination, particularly for families from Cuenca. It is located south of Pedernales, the epicentre of the earthquake. While the damage in San Clemente is not as extreme in Pedernales, many of the buildings have been destroyed and the locals from the village have decided to take shelter in the surrounding hills after rumours of tsunamis. Most of the current humanitarian aid to the area is focused on the most affected towns and help isn’t reaching San Clemente. They currently have no water supply or food.
On Wednesday 20th April, their first truckload arrived in San Clemente after a long journey along damaged roads as part of a humanitarian aid convoy coming from Cuenca and travelling together for security. In this first delivery there was water, food, blankets, baby supplies and an electric generator. Locals are taking care of distributing amongst their neighbors. They are in particular need of drinking water and non-perishable food.
