Every year it happens like clockwork. The weather becomes warmer, the days become longer and those outdoor pests seem to start making their yearly appearance in our homes.
When you see that first pest, before your grab one those cans of toxic chemicals or decide to move, consider this. As a green cleaning company we know it is always best to try chemical free options first before resorting to the toxic alternatives. Best of all, most these all natural pest control tips include items straight from your pantry!
Pest Control for Ants
Store food in tightly closed containers, vacuum crumbs and avoid leaving pet food out longer than necessary. Spray entry points with straight vinegar or use citrus or peppermint oil mixed with water in a small spray bottle. Sprinkle cinnamon, cayenne pepper, dried chili pepper, dried coffee grounds, paprika or place whole bay leaves at entry points in your home. These work great in areas where food is kept e.g. your kitchen cabinets. Another option is to add citrus, peppermint or vinegar to cotton balls and place in ant prone areas.
If the ant invasion has already begun try this non-toxic tip. Make a mixture of grated bar soap and water. Add to a spray bottle and spray directly on pests. The soap breaks down the insect’s waxy exoskeleton, allowing the water to drown it. Much better than those toxic chemicals in bug spray!
You can also use Food-grade Diatomaceous Earth, a chalky powder that is the natural fossilized remains of diatoms (a type of hard-shelled algae). The diatom particles are small and sharp, but at their microscopic size they are only harmful to the exoskeletons of small insects. Food-grade diatomaceous earth is so safe you can sprinkle it throughout your house and/or around your vegetable patch. To use, sprinkle a thin layer indoors or outdoors where insects are found. Leave for two days or however long you need to control pests and then clean up and reapply as needed. Also called ‘Insect Dust,’ this product is a registered insecticide with the government.
