New solution based on Apigee Edge brings the vision of FHIR API-based Argonaut Project closer to life; will help advance the digital transformation of care delivery
HIMSS15, CHICAGO – April 13, 2015 – Apigee®, developer of an intelligent API platform for digital business, today announced a new solution to make it faster and more efficient to share healthcare information. The new solution, based on the Apigee Edge API management platform and the API-based FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) standard, provides FHIR-ready REST APIs to help enable healthcare payors and providers to securely share data with mobile apps and meet the proposed Meaningful Use Stage 3 certification guidelines. The solution is designed to bring the vision of FHIR API-based Argonaut Project closer to life and enable healthcare companies to move faster to the digital world.
Apigee will be at HIMSS15 this week, located inside the Connected Patient Gallery, demonstrating and discussing this new healthcare solution.
“APIs are the underlying connectors of our digital world and are key to accelerating innovation in healthcare,” said Chet Kapoor, CEO of Apigee. “With this new healthcare solution, we are leveraging our core competency in APIs to enhance the interoperability of patient data and unleash the creativity of mobile health apps. We look forward to working with healthcare companies to realize project Argonaut’s vision of patient data interoperability.”
Argonaut Project is an open, industry-led “code sprint” to support FHIR-based APIs for patient data interoperability, with support from leading healthcare companies. The project is reimagining how APIs and open Internet standards can enable open health data and accelerate innovation in care delivery.
“I applaud Apigee’s commitment to join the growing Argonaut Project implementation community by providing FHIR-ready REST APIs,” noted Aneesh Chopra, the former (and first) U.S. chief technology officer in the Obama Administration. “The new Apigee healthcare solution helps simplify the steps payors and providers need to take to securely connect patient data to the emerging health apps ecosystem and to value-based payment services”.
Healthcare companies can experience a number of challenges in fueling innovation via patient-centric mobile apps: working with legacy systems, enabling granular access to information, ensuring security and privacy, providing authentication and authorization, and supporting rapid innovation cycles, among others. Healthcare stakeholders may not have a clear path to solving these challenges, which can slow or prevent them from sharing patient data.
“API-first” healthcare solution for patient data interoperability
Apigee’s new healthcare solution helps make it easier for healthcare stakeholders including payors, providers, labs, and pharmacies to securely share patient data with mobile health apps and with each other using the FHIR-ready APIs. Apigee’s approach improves the current CCDA (Consolidated Clinical Document Architecture) document based data exchange by providing granular level data access through APIs and enables a mobile app ecosystem supporting multiple compliant EHRs (Electronic Health Records) and patient data sources.
Key components of the solution to include:
● FHIR-ready APIs, managed with a HIPAA-compliant, specially adapted version of Apigee Edge. Apigee Edge also provides key security capabilities such as API-centric authentication and authorization, Internet security protocols including OpenID Connect, OAuth, and SAML, and key privacy capabilities such as role-based access control and consent management.
● Access to open source connectors to health systems to enable data availability from existing systems.
● Services, to help build new connectors to existing standards like HL7, CCDA and others.
“The Advisory Board Company strongly supports FHIR and Project Argonaut,” said David Kates, Managing Director, Interoperability, The Advisory Board Company. “We look forward to working with Apigee to demonstrate how our Crimson Care Management app uses Apigee technology to integrate with EHRs and utilize FHIR to streamline information sharing.”
“We’re delighted that Apigee is adopting our CCDA converter as part of their healthcare solution,“ said Peter L. Levin, CEO of Amida Technology Solutions. “Amida has built open source health IT components for many healthcare companies. We look forward to partnering with Apigee to make it easier for healthcare payors and providers to share patient data via FHIR APIs”.
“The Apigee APIs will make it easier for our current and future partners – such as payer/provider analytics solutions or consumer-facing mobile applications – to consume Carebox data,” said Brian Weiss, CEO of Carebox Healthcare Solutions. “The patient-centric data interoperability capabilities that Apigee and Carebox are delivering today demonstrate the transformative potential of consumer-centric APIs and FHIR.”
“By focusing on APIs and open and curated data, healthcare payors, providers, labs, and pharmacies can transform their business in a agile and incremental manner,” said Dr. Anand Deshpande, CEO of Persistent Systems. “We are excited to work with Apigee to bring the promise of project Argonaut to life.”
Apigee’s new healthcare solution is currently available on premises and through an Early Adopter Program in the cloud. The Early Adopter Program includes a developer sandbox, where participants can experience the system using demo data, prior to using their own.
