Kumkum Bhagya is an Indian television drama show, which premiered on April 15, 2014. It airs on Zee TV from Monday through Friday. The show is produced by Ekta Kapoor under her banner Balaji Telefilms. The show is loosely based on the novel Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen.
The show was subject to a heavy marketing campaign and saw a spike in viewership after the marriage of Pragya and Abhi.
Synopsis
Kumkum Bhagya is a show following the life of a Punjabi matriarch Sarla Arora who runs a marriage hall and lives with the hope of seeing her two daughters Pragya and Bulbul who’re poles apart, happily married some day.
Pragya, the elder daughter, who is practical, hardworking and committed to supporting her family though she’s barely finished her own studies,teaches at a college to ensure that her mother Sarla’s meager earnings from the ‘Kumkum Bhagya‘ marriage hall never fall short in making the two ends meet. In the midst of all this pressure on her, she’s forgotten how to unwind or pursue any passions of her own. Bulbul, the younger daughter who has her head in the clouds is vivacious, smart, stylish and a complete dreamer. It barely occurs to her to snap out her own make-believe, rose-tinted world and be of any real use to her family.
Pragya receives a proposal from the family of the famous rockstar Abhi. She is rather hesitant to marry Abhi,as they belong to a lower social status,and thus people will think she married him for his wealth. Abhi’s grandmother, Dadi, is sure that Pragya is the best girl for Abhi. Unknown to everyone,Abhi is in a relationship with his sister Aaliya’s friend-Tanu. Dadi doesn’t like Tanu, as she disapproves of modern girls wearing indecent clothes.Abhi convinces Tanu that he will eventually separate from Pragya when the time is right and he also tells Pragya that he is in a relationship with Tanu. On the other hand, Bulbul eventually develop feelings and falls in love with Abhi’s childhood friend, Purab. Unknown to both her and Purab, Aaliya (Abhi’s sister) is in love with him. Many events occur which test Abhi and Pragya’s trust for each other. Aaliya and Tanu are determined to throw Pragya out of the house.Aaliya hates Pragya because she is under the misconception that she was the one who Purab loved(she knows that Abhi and Pragya’s relationship is fake),and Tanu because she feels that Abhi is going farther away from her due to Pragya.They include Mitali(the first daughter in law of the house)in their plans as Mitali blames Pragya for her husband Raj being in jail,which is actually due to a conspiracy done by Mitali herself. They plan to make it look as if Pragya was having an affair with her colleague Suresh and shoot a video,which they send to Abhi.Dadi sees it by mistake(the family hid the video from her and Tanu sent it to Dadi in anger and frustration) and falls ill. Things reach up to such a level that Suresh and Pragya are almost married(forcefully),but Abhi finds out that Aaliya was the one who was responsible for everything and reveals this to everyone.Aaliya accepts that she did everything and tries to suicide when Abhi wants to get Purab and Bulbul to get married.She is saved and accepts that Purab does not love her and moves on.But she is only pretending so as to prevent anyone’s suspicion on her for her plan to kidnap Bulbul on her wedding day with Neil Thakur, as he loves Bulbul.Their plans go away when Pragya gets accidentally kidnapped by Neil’s goons instead of Bulbul.The marriage is postponed.Abhi goes after Pragya only to end up being kidnapped by the goons himself.Together they escape death narrowly many times and Abhi gets shot at while defending Pragya after they run away from the goons.They fall off a cliff and are presumed dead.Meanwhile,Purab decides to reveal to the public the news that Abhi the rockstar is kidnapped along with his wife and whoever can get news about them will receive 1 crore rupees in award.

Kumkum Bhagya is a Passionate love story produced by Ekta Kapoor & Shobha Kapoor under the banner Balaji Telefilms that airs on Zee TV. After producing shows like Kasamh Se, Pavitra Rishta and Jodha Akbar on Zee TV, the czarina of Indian television, Ekta Kapoor is back with her another new daily soap named ‘Kumkum Bhagya‘. After producing more than 80 shows starting with the letter “K”, this show is Ekta’s first “K” production after Kya Huaa Tera Vaada that aired on Sony TV in 2012. As the letter ‘K’ is lucky to the producer Ekta Kapoor, she hopes that this show will gain good ratings on the TRP chart.
Reception
Initially started with low ratings, the show climbed to Top 5 most watched shows across all GEC’s and second most watched show of Zee TV after few weeks of its launch and was touted as the biggest fiction launch of 2014.
