There’s fantastic news for British fans of RuPaul’s Drag Race today – as the show has finally found a new home on UK telly.
The flamboyant reality show will be sashaying its way on to Turner-owned channel truTV in June, it has been announced.
The news was confirmed by RuPaul herself on her Twitter page, with the star writing: “It’s official: @RuPaul is coming to @truTVUK in June. Get your drag on. #DragRace”
truTV – which is available on Freeview, Sky and Freesat – has the rights to all seven US seasons, as well as behind-the-scenes spin-off RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked.
However, fans hoping to catch the latest run – which begun earlier this month across the pond – will face an additional wait, as truTV will begin by airing season four.
Although Drag Race is available on Netflix in the UK, the streaming service currently only has the first six seasons. Previously, the first two editions aired on Channel 4 offshoot E4, but it dropped the show in 2010.
Jane Mote, Turner UK’s director of general entertainment, said: “RuPaul’s Drag Race is an entertaining, outrageous show packed full of larger-than-life characters with a balance of humour and warmth that our viewers love. It’s a perfect fit for truTV, complementing the existing slate and showcasing the channel’s sense of fun.”
Drag Race follows RuPaul as he searches for America’s next drag superstar, with contestants facing challenges such as creating unique runway looks as well as the signature lip-sync showdown. It has featured celebrity guests such as Pamela Anderson and Sharon Osbourne.
RuPaul is joined on the judging panel by fashion expert Carson Kressley, comedian Ross Mathews, and Michelle Visage – who was a housemate in the most recent series of Channel 5’s Celebrity Big Brother.
The 46-year-old singer and radio host proved popular with viewers, finishing in fifth place in the grand final.
Last year, telly presenter Jonathan Ross revealed that he is working with Jodie Harsh on a UK version of Drag Race – but it has yet to be picked up by a broadcaster.
