A brand-new mail client called CloudMagic launched today on the App Store. The app supports most email services and has all of the basic features you’d expect from a mail app. One CloudMagic feature blows most other apps away, though: search.

Rather than searching on your phone for a certain email and then remotely searching each individual mail account to find what you’re looking for, CloudMagic caches your entire mail account on their server and uses server-side search to find any message almost instantly. The search is powerful and intelligently suggests words and phrases that I found to be exactly what I was looking for.

Of course, the big downside here is exactly what makes the app work so well. Allowing a third-party to cache your emails on their server is always a risk. Sure, Gmail’s servers might be secure, but if CloudMagic’s data is ever compromised, it won’t matter how secure Gmail (or whatever service you use) keeps things on their end. This is the same problem many email clients run into when attempting to provide push email or advanced cloud-based features.

If you’re willing to take that tradeoff, CloudMagic is a quick and powerful mail client, especially if you find yourself frequently searching your archived messages. CloudMagic is available now for free on the App Store. An in-app purchase is available to increase the number of mail accounts you can use with the app.
