Mobilink’s SMS Based Literacy Program has commendable contribution to m-education: DG UNESCO

Mobilink and The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Pakistan jointly hosted an evening in the Honour of the Global Director General UNESCO, Irina Bokova. Irina Bokova who is visiting Pakistan on a two-day tour was briefed about Mobilink’s SMS Based Literacy Program which won the Global Mobile Award 2013. The networking session was also attended by State Ministers, Secretaries, Ambassador of the United States of America and the Australian High Commissioner.



Omar Manuzr, Head of Corporate Communication Mobilink welcomed the DG UNESCO on her visit to Pakistan and briefed the guests about SMS Based Literacy Program. He said, “Education is an important pillar of Mobilink’s Corporate Social Responsibility and we have introduced several campaigns to support education. We are proud to have won GSMA’s Global Mobile Award in 2013 for our SMS Based Literacy Project and will continue to work with UNESCO to further expand its outreach in Pakistan.’’

Irina Bokova, DG UNESCO speaking to the guests said, “The partnership of Corporate and the Social Sector organizations have the potential to make significant difference towards the betterment of the society. I am very pleased to know that Mobilink works for education as a major category of its CSR initiatives and congratulate them on winning the GMA 2013 for their SMS Based Literacy program.’’

Mobilink’s SMS Based Literacy program was piloted in 2009 when it enrolled students from the rural areas to provide them with basic literacy through interactive lessons via SMS. UNESCO is supporting Mobilink by providing the curriculum and management support in the implementation of the project.
