Japan has conducted smart city experiments in four locations- City of Yokohama, Toyota City, Keihanna Science City (Kyoto Prefecture) and City of Kitakyushu. Kansai Bunka Gakujutsu Kenkyu Toshi (Kansai Science City) is situated in a hilly region that spans three prefectures (Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara Prefectures) and is the location of eight municipalities.

Keihanna Science City or Kyoto Perfecture  is a new city constructed by a national project to serve as a center of culture, learning, and research, a new cultural capital intended to open paths into the future. In addition to the Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International and the Kansai-kan of the National Diet Library, the city is home to a large number of company laboratories and other research institutes, and possesses strong technological and communications capacity.

Kyoto’s Smart City partners include companies and organization from all spectrum be it Kansai Research Institute, Kyoto Center for Climate Actions, Enegates, Osaka Gas, OMRON, Kansai Electric Power, Sharp, Nihon Unisys, Mitsubishi Motors, Mitsubishi Electric, Mitsubishi Heavy Indsutry, Fuji Electric, Furukawa Electric and others.

Kyoto Prefecture - Kyoto prefecture is at the center of the Japanese archipelago, and its area of 4,613.21 square Km covers 1.2 percent of the archipelago, making it the 31st largest of the 47 prefectures.
Kizugawa City - Kizugawa City is an active constituent of the Kansai Science City. The laboratories and research in various fields have brought researchers from all over the world to Kizugawa City, thus giving the city an international character.
Kyotanabe City - Kyotanabe City is located in the heart on Kansai, surrounded by Kyoto, Nara and Osaka. It is a town surrounded by nature, with Kannabi Mountain extending out to the Ikoma Mountains in the West and the Kizu River gently flowing in the East. The city is an amalgamation of the formers towns of Tanabe, Oosumi, Miyamaki, Kusauchi, and Fugenji.
Seika Town - Seika has long served as a “cultural corridor” between Kyōto and Nara. The area has been inhabited since the Yayoi period (around AD 100), when it flourished as an agricultural village. Due to Seika’s location within commuting distance Nara, Kyōto, and Osaka, as well as the richness of its natural surroundings, the town experienced a population boom beginning in the 1970s, and is now home to over 36,000 residents. Now, as the center of the Kansai Science City, development is advancing like never before.
Kansai Research Institute - Kansai Science City so called “Keihanna Science City” was set up by Kansai Academic Research City Surveillance Conversazione in 1978. As soon as the construction promotion law for Kansai Science City was brought into force in 1987, the city constructions started substantially as a national project in the area of the Kansai hills extended to the three prefectures, Kyoto, Osaka and Nara.Number of the move-in institutes has been more than 250 and those institutes are contributing evolutions of our Science activities generating lots of accomplishments in coordination with industries, academies and government.
Kansai Economic Federation - Kankeiren’s main objective is to work for the benefit of the Kansai region as a whole by developing a social environment in which companies pursue their businesses freely and actively, as well as to further promote Kansai’s attractiveness.

India too need to have a long list of partners for Smart City project and it should be a mix of Indian and foreign companies from all spectrum so that all aspects of smart city can be achieved over a period of time.
