Google's Android division certainly has a sense of humor as it named all their version code names after desserts. This GREEN ANDROID IS CODED AS ANDY. To celebrate new version release of Android, a giant mock-up of the dessert that matches the codename is usually delivered to the Google Campus and put on display.

  Android, Inc. was founded in Palo Alto, California in October 2003 by Andy Rubin (co-founder of Danger), Rich Miner (co-founder of Wildfire Communications, Inc.), Nick Sears and Chris Whiteto develop, in Rubin's words "smarter mobile devices that are more aware of its owner's location and preferences".

GOOGLE ON THE JOURNEY

 The Awesome Android, (also briefly known as Awesome Andy), is a fictional character that appears in comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character first appeared in Fantastic Four (June 1963) and was created by writer Stan Lee and artist and co-plotter Jack Kirby.

 Noname 1.0 and 1.1 versions

   There were no name for Android Versions 1.0 and 1.1.

Android was headed by several mobile bigshots, including former head of a big carrier, ex-owner of a phone maker, and more. After their buyout, Android went into stealth mode, and rumors spread that Google is working on a mobile phone.

    

   When Google suddenly announced that they are indeed working on a phone (Google Phone), but also a brand-new mobile operating system called Android, based on the Linux kernel, to be used by the Open Handset Alliance, a group of 65 different hardware maker, carriers, and other mobile-related companies.

     

    And HTC was the first to get real consumer phone, in October 2008.

    

   Then there was an update for Android, version 1.1, was released in February 2009. However, the first version of Android OS that really showcased the power of the platform is V1.5, was named as  "Cupcake".

  

   The first two versions was suspected to named from letters "A" and "B"

respectively, as android version 1.5 was coded as Cupcake starting with "C".

 But the names were not assigned.

Android 1.5 - Cupcake

  Android 1.5 (Cupcake) was not the first version to be released, it was the first to receive the name. The stories relating, this stated that this android version  be named as version 1.2, but Google decided to make it a major revision and made it 1.5 instead, and gave it the dessert name "cupcake" as it's codename, and that's when the "dessert series" got started.

    Google's description    "Right from the start, Android is an open OS that can run almost any app or widget, allowing you to do what you want to do."

 

   A Cupcakes may be topped with frosting or other cake decorations. They may be filled with frosting or pastry cream.

 

Android 1.6 - Donut

    The Google's next android Version 1.6 was referred as Donut, was released in September 2009. It had fixed reboot errors in the OS as well as revamped photo and video features like camera interface and better search integration. It also added support for larger screen size, and is the first version to offer Google turn-by-turn navigation feature giving Android a pride....

   It's features includes a redesigned search framework that provides a quick, effective, and consistent way for users to search across multiple sources—such as browser bookmarks & history, contacts, and the web—directly from the home screen.

   

    The system constantly learns which search results are more relevant based on what is clicked. So popular contacts or apps that have previously been picked will bubble up to the top when a user types the first few letters of a relevant query.   

  Google's description "The world's information is at your fingertips – search the web, get driving directions... or watch cat videos."

   

   Donuts are usually deep-fried from a flour dough, and typically either ring-shaped or without a hole and often filled. Other types of batters can also be used, and various toppings and flavorings are used for different types, such as sugar, chocolate, or maple glazing.    

Android 2.0 - Eclair 

    Android 2.0 was coded as Eclair, and was released in October 2009. Later many different versions were resealed with improvements. With a bugfix version 2.0.1 in December 2009. Android 2.1 was released January of 2010. Most people consider them a single release. Added features include Bluetooth 2.1 support, flash and digital zoom for the camera, multi-touch support, live wallpapers, and more.

   An Eclair is an oblong pastry made with choux dough filled with a cream and topped with icing. The dough, which is the same as that used for profiterole, is typically piped into an oblong shape with a pastry bag and baked until it is crisp and hollow inside

Android 2.2 - Froyo

    As Google's rapid Android series continued, it's next version was Android 2.2 Froyo, mainly improved speed by adopting the Javascript "just-in-time" compiler engine from the Google browser "Chrome", as well as improved browser support by adding animated GIF support, Flash 10.1 plug-in support, along with USB tethering and Wi-Fi Hotspot capability (for those with supporting hardware). 

    

    Android 2.2 is a minor platform release including user features, developer features, API changes, and bug fixes. For information on developer features and API changes, see the Framework API section. 

  

   For developers, the Android 2.2 platform is available as a downloadable component for the Android SDK. The downloadable platform includes an Android library and system image, as well as a set of emulator skins and more. To get started developing or testing against Android 2.2, use the Android SDK Manager to download the platform into your SDK.     

    Google's description "Voice Typing lets you input text, while Voice Actions allow you to control your phone, just by speaking. "            

   

  Froyo  is a frozen dessert made with yogurt and sometimes other dairy products. It varies from slightly to much more tart than ice cream, as well as being lower in fat (due to the use of milk instead of cream). It is different from ice milk (more recently termed low-fat or light ice cream) and conventional soft serve.                                                                 

Android 2.3.3 - Gingerbread

  The Gingerbread man on Google family has been reported in early November 2010, and he was officially released in December 2010.

On December 7th, 2010, Google officially announced the Nexus S to be released on T-Mobile, the first phone with Android OS 2.3 Gingerbread.

   Gingerbread features support for SIP internet calling, NFC wireless transaction capability (if hardware is present), support for more than one camera, support for gyroscope and other sensors (barometer, gravimeter, and others are possible), download manager, some tweaks to allow usage on Tablets, and other system level tweaks for programmers.

   

    Then a new man emerged referring himself as  Android 2.3.4 with the same name Gingerbread.Android 2.3.4 (GINGERBREAD_MR1) is a maintenance release that adds several bug fixes and patches to the Android 2.3 platform, without any API changes from Android 2.3.3. Additionally, Android 2.3.4 brings support for the Open Accessory API to mobile devices, through the optional Open Accessory Library.

    

     Google's description "New sensors make Android great for gaming – so you can touch, tap, tilt and play away. "

     Gingerbread is a sweet food-product flavored with ginger and typically using honey or molasses (treacle) rather than just sugar. Gingerbread foods vary, ranging from a soft, moist loaf cake to something close to a ginger biscuit.

Android 3.0 - Honeycomb               

    The android circle is becoming bigger and better. The new member of the family was coded as Honeycomb. He was released in February 2011, and was rapidly followed by 3.1 and 3.2 which only came out in July / August 2011. Google posted a lot of previews and highlights on Honeycomb.

   

   Android-based tablets should be running 3.X as that will be optimized for tablets, that did not stop a slew of smaller manufacturers as well as Samsung from putting out an army of Android tablets of various sizes before the end of 2010 with Android 2.X hoping to catch the Christmas shopping season and success of Apple's iPad.

   Motorola Xoom is the first Android 3.X tablet to be released, It has since been followed by a ton of Table

  Dessert-wise... Honeycomb is a sweetened breakfast cereal that has been made since 1965 by Post Cereals. It consists of honey-flavored corn cereal bits in a honeycomb shape.

Android 4.0 - Ice Cream Sandwich

As the recent family members limitations were out shown like Honeycomb (3.x) remained as only a tablet-only OS, while the phones will keep getting Gingerbread (2.x) updates.These limitation gave birth to new family member Android OS 4.0 referred as "Ice Cream Sandwich" arrived with stunning features. 

   Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) is the latest version of the Android platform for phones, tablets, and more. It built on the things people love most about Android — easy multitasking, rich notifications, customizable home screens, resizable widgets, and deep interactivity — and adds powerful new ways of communicating and sharing. 

Google's description "Android comes of age with a new, refined design. Simple, beautiful and beyond smart."

  An ice cream sandwich is a frozen confection composed of a layer of ice cream sandwiched between two biscuits/cookies or slices of cake.

Android 4.1: Jelly Bean

  The fellow was powerfully built by the  performance improvements included in Jelly Bean — sync timing, triple buffering, reduced touch latency, CPU input boost, and hardware-accelerated 2D rendering. In addition this guy got improves rendering for shapes and text. Shapes such as circles and rounded rectangles are now rendered at higher quality in a more efficient manner. Optimizations for text include increased performance when using multiple fonts or complex glyph sets (CJK), higher rendering quality when scaling text, and faster rendering of drop shadows.
