Olympus Announces Two New Multi Photon Laser Scanning Microscope – Feb 09, 2015– Tokyo, Japan (Techreleased) – Olympus Corporation today announced that its Scientific Solutions Business is commencing the progressive worldwide release of two new systems of its FLUOVIEW FVMPE-RS multi photon laser scanning microscope*1, a gantry microscope system and an inverted microscope system.

Olympus markets its biological confocal laser scanning microscopes*2 and multi photon laser scanning microscopes*1 for use in leading-edge life science research as the FLUOVIEW series. An appreciated feature of the series is its ability to capture 3D images with high contrast by detecting the very weak light (fluorescence) produced by samples when scanned with a laser beam.

The series includes the FLUOVIEW FVMPE-RS multi photon laser scanning microscope (released in July 2013), the high-end model among Olympus’s biological microscopes, which can capture rapid biological responses at deep sites. Adding to the existing upright microscope system, Olympus has now released gantry and inverted systems. By providing a range of three microscope systems from which to choose the variant best suited to the samples to be observed, this further enhances the scope for the FLUOVIEW FVMPE-RS to contribute to leading edge research by opening up a wider range of observation possibilities.

Launch Overview

Inverted microscope system

Main Features

Gantry microscope system: High degree of flexibility to suit different samples

Inverted microscope system: Ideal for observation of cells in Three-Dimensional Cultures*3

*1

A type of microscope that can produce 3Dimages by taking advantage of the ability to use IR pulse laser light to generate fluorescence from the focal point only. The image is built up by scanning the sample.

*2

A type of microscope that can produce 3D images by blocking fluorescence other than from the focal point. The image is built up by scanning the sample with the laser.

*3

A culturing method with multiple layers of cells on a petri dish or similar. In a living body, cells are able to multiply in the vertical as well as the horizontal direction to form tissue or organs. Use of Three-Dimensional cultured cells allows observation to be performed under conditions closer to those in a living organism.

Launch Background

A common research technique in the life sciences is the use of live cells to elucidate the role and function of proteins or nerves, and to seek out applications for these in drug discovery or other new fields. In the case of cerebral nerves in particular, there is a need to observe biological responses taking place at sites below the tissue surface in order to elucidate the nerve mechanisms and to research and develop therapeutic drugs or other treatments for conditions such as cancer or Alzheimer’s that remain poorly understood.

The FLUOVIEW FVMPE-RS multi photon laser scanning microscope (released in July 2013) meets the needs of researchers in this field, drawing on optical and digital technology acquired over many years for the capture of rapid biological responses taking place deep inside tissue. Previously only available as an upright microscope system for observing samples from above, Olympus has now added gantry and inverted microscope systems to enable the observation of samples in many different shapes and sizes. This expands the possibilities for observation by providing a range of three microscope configurations from which to choose the variant best suited to the sample.

Details of Main Features

FLUOVIEW FVMPE-RS multi photon laser scanning microscope

Positioned as the high-end model in Olympus’s range of biological microscopes, and used in leading-edge life science research, the FLUOVIEW FVMPE-RS features faster scanning speed and more enhanced performance at deep observation than other models in the FLUOVIEW series. In addition to using the high speed scanner to observe rapid biological responses, the FLUOVIEW FVMPE-RS can also obtain vivid images from as deep as 8mm*4 below the surface of tissue.

1. Gantry microscope system: High degree of flexibility to suit different samples

Considerable space is available beneath the objective to allow the observation of samples of many different sizes. A volume 640 mm wide, 355 mm high, and 520 mm deep is available if the stage is removed, providing the system with sufficient space for the researcher’s own experimental apparatus and giving it the flexibility to suit different observation purposes.

2. Inverted microscope system: Ideal for observation of cells in Three-Dimensional Cultures*3

Inverted microscopes observe the sample from below. This configuration allows cultured cells adhered to the base of the petri dish to be observed without spilling culture fluid onto the objective. It is also suitable for use with Three-Dimensional cell cultures, which are increasingly being used in research fields such as regenerative medicine and cancer.
