Virtual Reality (VR) developer Logan Olson’s plan to eliminate the need for musicians to spend their hard-earned money renting out the recording studios — or even having to buy instruments, for that matter. That’s thanks to Olson’s SoundStage app, a new VR music tool for HTC Vive headset, which takes the concept of bedroom producer to the next level.

It is described as a VR music sandbox built specifically for room-scale VR, and Olson says it is suitable for everyone from professional DJ’s to people who have always wanted to rock out with a set of virtual drums.

SoundStage is a polished piece of software with a lot of scope for the fun. There are things you can do with the SoundStage interface that you just could not any other way. Even if you could somehow manipulate a real 3D theremin that is been fed through multiple synthesizers to modify a drum pad being played in the real time, the setup would not float in the air and you’d have a whole lot of cable mess to deal with. And your maracas would not glow as you shook them.

SoundStage is Olson’s first independent project after having previously built room-scale VR at Institute for Creative Technologies, as well as for theme parks. They describes it as an attempt to combine their love of synthesizers with VR. ‘You can hook up your sounds to the electro-maracas or drive your keyboard with a 3D theremin,’ they notes in the materials accompanying the app’s launch. ‘All in a world inspired by the airbrush paintings and the computer graphics of the ’80s. When I was a kid during that time, this is how I would imagine making music would look in the 21st century.’

SoundStage is out now on Steam Early Access for $9.99.
