Jolla smartphone with Sailfish OS soon be available in India

Jolla, founded by ex-Nokia executives, started selling its smartphone based on Sailfish OS to mobile operator DNA’s customers in Finland in November last year. The company has announced through a press statement that it is set to expand its appearance by selling the smartphone in some other countries, including India, Russia and Hong Kong. The company is in plans to sell its smartphone online and also started negotiating with partners, which seems to be available soon through online retailers in the respective countries or through the company’s own website. Aside market expansion to new countries, the company is also set to soon open new channels in main European markets.

The main USP of Jolla smartphone is the presence of open-source Sailfish OS. The company has stated that Sailfish OS supports both native Sailfish OS applications as well as Android applications. The company has released three significant software updates so far and in development to release the fourth update in the beginning of March.

On announcing the new version of Sailfish OS, Marc Dillon, Co-Founder and COO of Jolla, said;

“We’re very excited to announce this. We’ve been working hard together with our user community to make the user experience of the Jolla smartphone and Sailfish OS effortless and distinct. We believe that Jolla now offers a truly viable option for all smartphone users. Naturally we are not stopping here, as we continue to provide monthly software updates to Jolla devices and Sailfish OS.”

In order to get more focus from developers, Sailfish OS has been developed to be compatible with Android hardware platforms and it is easy to port on the existing Android smartphones, including Samsung Galaxy, Sony Xperia and Google Nexus series of devices. Jolla will release Sailfish OS software for download in phases during the first half of 2014.

Aside standalone Sailfish OS, Jolla has announced the release of its own Sailfish user interface launcher as an Android app. The launcher will simulate the Sailfish OS experience on Android devices and it will be available for free download “in the near future” through the company’s website and Google Play Store.
