Hollywood produced some good—and not so good—comic movies last year. Among the standouts, Fox’s Deadpool charmed audience with its naughty humor and ultra-violence. We also saw Batman and Superman pummel each other before becoming besties. It was a lot like that scene from Step Brothers; “Did we just become best friends?” “Yup!”
This year will feature a lot less superhero infighting. What we’ll get instead is Logan’s last stand, Spider-Man’s first solo movie since 2014, and Taika Waititi’s quirky take on Thor. We also get to jump back in time to see Wonder Woman help Steve Trevor bring an end to World War I.
While this list is in order of preference (based on trailers, descriptions, etc.), the truth is we’re excited to see them all. Don’t for a second think that just because The Lego Batman Movie is at the bottom we don’t think it looks like the best Batman movie in years.
Logan
Logan is shaping up to be a bittersweet sendoff for the mutton-chopped mutant. Hugh Jackman has said this will be the last time he dons Wolverine’s adamantium claws, and based on what we’ve seen, the film looks like the perfect cinematic end. There appears to be plenty of violence, emotion, and foul language, good for that hallowed R rating. Early buzz has been overwhelmingly positive, so hopefully this one doesn’t disappoint.

Thor: Ragnarok
This one is the most mysterious of the bunch. Marvel hasn’t shared much info about the film, and it’s the only one without a teaser or trailer. Still, the proposition of seeing Thor and Hulk in a gladiator-style fight is incredibly tantalizing. Not to mention the cast, crew, and story—Planet Hulk appears to be a major inspiration—are all aligning to make for what will no doubt be the best Thor movie yet. And also: Darryl.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Humor, action, and music defined the first Guardians, and it looks like director James Gunn will deliver more of the same. Not much is known about the upcoming sequel but from what we’ve seen, Baby Groot is going to be a standout. Some of the new characters include Elizabeth Debicki’s Ayesha and Kurt Russell’s Ego, the latter of whom is described as “an ancient and mysterious being who is Peter Quill’s father.”

Spider-Man: Homecoming
I wasn’t blown away by Homecoming’s first trailer, but I did enjoy Tom Holland’s take as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. To be honest, I’m almost more curious to see Michael Keaton’s Vulture, who looks absolutely terrifying when completely suited up. Homecoming will supposedly feel like a John Hughes movie, which should perfectly suit Holland’s energetic personality.

Justice League
Boy, does Zack Snyder need to deliver with Justice League. The director received a lot of flack for Batman v Superman, but he has promised the upcoming superhero team-up will be lighter, more exciting, and actually entertaining. We’ve seen what Marvel Studios can do when its heroes band together for the greater good. Now, it’s time for DC to show that its shared universe deserves a home on the big screen.

Wonder Woman
Seeing Wonder Woman join the fight was the best part of Batman v Superman, and we can’t wait to see more in her upcoming solo film. The film will give her some much-needed backstory and tell us why she’s become so jaded with humanity. We’ll also get to hear her amazing theme song, which gives me goosebumps every time it plays.

The Lego Batman Movie
Will Arnett’s sarcastic Batman was such a big hit in The Lego Movie that he got his own movie—and it’s hitting theaters in just a few weeks. Based on the trailer, it looks as funny as we hoped and features an effervescent Michael Cera as Robin and Zach Galifianakis as Joker. That’s a winning combination right there.
