Yes, Square Enix announced yet another mobile Final Fantasy XV spin-off in the months leading into its release. This latest one is being created in collaboration with Mobile Strike and Game of War developer Machine Zone as a massively multiplayer mobile game.

In the announcement, Machine Zone Founder and CEO Gabe Leydon expressed humble gratification at the chance to work on a Final Fantasy game.

It is an honor to work on a franchise I have loved since I was a kid. Final Fantasy is an iconic franchise in gaming. Bringing Final Fantasy XV to the mobile MMO gaming world is a significant opportunity for our players and we are proud to partner with Square Enix.

Square Enix President and Representative Director Yosuke Matsuda also praised the new partnership

Machine Zone has a stellar track record in the mobile gaming space and we are putting Final Fantasy XV in trustworthy hands. We are very excited to work with the MZ team to bring together two leaders in the gaming world and look forward to Final Fantasy XV on MZ’s amazing gaming platform. We’ll work together to create MZ’s next great global mobile MMO game.

How many spin-offs does a game need?

Not that I’m complaining or calling anyone out, but Final Fantasy XV certainly does have a lot of spin-offs for a game that hasn’t even proven itself on the market. Wouldn’t it be hilarious if nobody ended up playing Final Fantasy XV because they were so busy with these smaller games?

For what it’s worth, it’s a much smarter strategy than what Square Enix went through 10 years ago when it announced waves of big-budget games before Final Fantasy XIII came out. This new strategy is low risk with relatively cheap games, and it mirrors Nintendo’s mobile strategy, getting you excited to play the real experience while you are away from your home console.

There is no release date for the mobile MMO game, but Final Fantasy XV launches for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on Nov. 29.
